The Details: Yngwie Is God! Well, at least that was what one of my friends told me so many years ago and he is a guitar player so likely knows this a little better than a drummer like me would. Nevertheless, I have greatly enjoyed this master musicians output for decades and was super excited at the chance to offer my readers this contest thanks to the fine folks at Livenation. Check out how you can see his concert at Irving Plaza for free…….

When and Where: Tuesday, April30th at Irving Plaza (17 Irving Place, NYC)

To Participate: I really wanted to let this one be a “Guitarist Only” kind of contest but I will not be so exclusionary in the end. However, if you are a guitar slinger tell me how important this musician’s style is to you and how he perhaps laid down some influence to your own playing. If you are not a guitarist just convince me about how bad you want to go. I’ll be selecting a few lucky responders and will let them know right below their comment. Please be sure to enter your full real name and an email address in the comment form (but not the comment itself) so we can reach you and it never hurts to subscribe to comments for the duration of this contest. Go.

Restrictions: While all contests are open to our regional site readers, we do look at new responders first in order to give everyone a fair shot at enjoying a show on the provider and us. Of course we still encourage all to respond because you never know just how many tickets we are offering. At present we have a lot of contests running but you just might be lucky based on the overall response. Please note that “Anonymous” or “Guest” submissions while approved are not eligible to win.

  1. Yngwie was one of those guitarists who really pushed the envelope in terms of what one could do with the instrument. I remember when I first heard his albums I was thinking ” People can play guitar like this?? Wow!”. Imitators and followers soon showed up on the scene, but Yngwie’s stuff, at least first few albums, still stand strong as some of the best metal albums ever. I couldn’t really invest the time it takes to try to get to that level at the time, but every time I listen to tracks like I am a Viking and Disciples of Hell, I air guitar like mad and wish I put in the effort so I could at least play along. I would love to see the master live. I think I only saw him once a few years ago when he opened for Dio. It was a very short set, with Jorn Lande on the mic during his very brief tenure as one of Yngwie’s vocalists.

  2. Although I am a bassist, I appreciate a great guitarist, and as such, I am the bassist in a Ritchie Blackmore tribute, Mistreated. The reason I mention that is because Yngwie also drew inspiration from Blackmore , and it was reading an interview with Yngwie where he named him an influence that caused me to buy the Steeler album that featured him and then follow his career. I remember going to meet him at Tower records in the Village and getting that album signed. Great guitarist that has to be seen to be believed.

    1. I agree with you NY Bassman, a great showman no matter what. Congratulations. You have won a ticket for the show on Tuesday. Please stay tuned for details on how to claim it in our comments.

  3. 25 years ago, that would have been funny. Now, it’s just sad. If your only definition of guitar playing is ultra-fast self indulgence, then Yngwie might take the title. But if you’re talking about playing stuff that anyone actually wants to rock out to, he doesn’t even make the top 200.

    1. Okay Jonathan, a different way of looking at it for sure but congrats as you have won a ticket for the show on Tuesday. Please stay tuned to these comments for the full details on how to claim the ticket.

  4. Oh there you are. Sure thing and you have won one of the tickets as well. Stay tuned to the comments for the details on how to claim this the night of the show.

  5. Since I have heard You Don’t Remember and I’ll See the Light Tonight I have been hooked and find Yngwie to have a style that is eccentric. Seeing him live for the first time would be the ultimate experience.

    1. Well if you are hooked we are just going to have to keep feeding the addiction and say congrats on your winning one of the tickets for the Yngwie show on Tuesday. Stay tuned to the comments for the details on how to claim the ticket.
