Want To See Portnoy, Sheehan, Macalpine & Sherinian in Concert in NYC On 11/18/2012?

Poster - Portnoy Sheehan

Wow. Talk about a powerhouse lineup of accomplished musicians. Mike Portnoy, Billy Sheehan, Tony Macalpine and Derek Sherinian. Outstanding levels of talent in each of them and a truly juggernaut level of musical assault when they combine forces. It’s beyond exciting that the band will be playing their only US Appearance for 2012 at the legendary B.B. King Blues Club but even more awesome to be able to treat some of the PiercingMetal readers to the show thanks to the powers that be for the venue. Here’s the official description from their website

“Drummer Mike Portnoy (DREAM THEATER, AVENGED SEVENFOLD), bassist Billy Sheehan (STEVE VAI, DAVID LEE ROTH), guitarist Tony MacAlpine (neo classical-metal style, STEVE VAI) and keyboardist Derek Sherinian (DREAM THEATER, PLANET X, BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION) will join forces this fall playing an all-instrumental set consisting of material from each of their solo records and their previous collaborations as well as classic instrumental covers and extended solo spots. Portnoy formed the lineup to perfom at two drum events at the NAMM show last January. Due to overwhelming response, that band has decided to take their show on the road. “I knew when assembling this lineup that it would be a magical musical experience that would be a blast for us as well as the fans! I can’t wait to play again with these tremendous musicians and share the experience with you all at these special shows!” says Portnoy.”

To participate please toss us a comment about any two of these incredible musicians and let me know just how they affect your musical psyche. Since this particular group has yet to record any material, my Amazon.com links below will bring you to some great examples of their past work. I started with a great live presentation by Dream Theater for Mike Portnoy. This was recorded right here in NYC at the famous Radio City Music Hall. What a show. Then there is a greatest hits package from Mr. Big and a great collection from his legacy band Talas for Mr. Sheehan. That band smoked. I tossed in what I consider one of the best guitar albums of all time with “Edge Of Insanity” by Macalpine along with “Black Utopia” from Sherinian. Of course it would not be right to leave out one of Mike’s amazing drumming DVD’s so that is there also. I hope you take a moment to check them out or purchase and make them part of your collection.

  1. well aside from MIke Portnoy being the sole reason why my drummer in Winter Nights even plays drums, i cant thank Portnoy enough for that.

but when i first saw Billy Sheehan on youtube, it really showed me how crazy a bassist can move on the fret-board with the sweeping and tapping and amazing licks, he’s probably my fav bassist to watch. still haven’t seen him live in person yet.

Tony Macalpine is a phenomenal guitarist, id love to see how he comes together with these guys, what they have in store for this show and all.

with this all being said, id be honored to be given a ticket to see this show. cheers Ken!
