You probably already know her name well from at one time being the stratospheric vocal register behind Finland’s mighty Nightwish and in case you haven’t been keeping up with her musical adventures for a while, singer Tarja Turunen has kept quite busy as a solo artist and has recently released the single “Victim Of Ritual”. The tune hails from her upcoming album “Colours In The Dark” and it’s a wonderful number that travels over different worlds of melody as it plays through. Some solemn drums bring us into the tune and then a slightly familiar almost Middle Easten melody begins which I later learned was inspired by Ravel’s “Bolero”. When Tarja begins to sing we are instantly reminded of the power in even her softer moments and it’s a welcome thing for sure.

Of course the tune does get heavier and that is when we find the Tarja that we know and love the most. Her notes cut through the riffs and elevate your senses like she always used to do to us. Musically the tune is a winner and covers a lot of ground from slower to faster and heavier. There is a bit of a traditional Nightwish flair to it but that is to be expected IMHO. The single also includes two live tracks that were recorded at Stadium Luna Park in Bueno Aires, Argentina. These are solid offerings as well and find Tarja in command of what sounds like a capacity crowd. That’s always nice to hear on a live recording. I’m very excited for the upcoming album based on the single that we were given with “Victim Of Ritual” and am hopeful that Tarja gets to some touring in this region soon as its been far too long since she’s paid a visit.
