Ever since witnessing the overpowering live presence of Sweden’s Sabaton several years ago, I’ve done my best to become one of those “catch-up” fans by snagging some of their older works and vowing to support any tour that I was able to be a part of when they came to our neck of the woods. Earlier today the band released the first single from their upcoming album “The Last Stand” which continues the presentation of what I have been referring to as “War History Metal” with “The Lost Battalion”. Here’s what the bands official website says about the tune.

“‘The Lost Battalion’ is the name given to nine companies of the United States’ 77th Division during the battle of the Argonne in 1918. Even though these 550-575 brave men were completely surrounded by the German Army and subjected to friendly artillery fire, they kept on fighting for a week until they were relieved. Of the over 500-plus soldiers who entered the Argonne Forest, only 194 walked out unscathed. The rest were killed, missing, captured, or wounded.”

Clearly these guys are super well read on great conflicts and its impressive to get these little history lessons in some thundering Metal as well. The track is a rousing one and has a wonderful chorus but I was a little down on the way that the drums sounded to me. There was a fullness missing that I have come to expect from the band after these last years. I’m sure this one will have quite a few of the fans singing along with their fists in the air. “Weapon in hand as they made their stand” is quite a powerful line. Nice work Sabaton, you continually impress me and I look forward to this new epic release.
