This is the first time that I am getting to listen to God Dethroned and while I had heard a few tracks on some of the Internet/Cable stations I did not remember their exact sound at the time. So when I began this review I expected it to be an example of another really heavy Grind-Core like music. This was originally based on the group name and their cover artwork, a cover that really actually came across very well and did fit the name and premise of this band which does not happen all that much.

While I felt that the band has its own unique style there were times when I found myself picking up fragments of old In Flames and Dark Tranquility. This piece is an even blend of classic Death Metal that mixes in elements of Black Metal at points. In my humble opinion this is an excellent album, I love the transitioning that this band has. The songs flow evenly throughout the tune rather than jumping around like so many of their peers. There is also a considerable amount of double-bass drumming, and I am a major fan of this in metal as a whole. The level of production on the piece is also outstanding, a lot cleaner and more precise than one hears in some Death Metal music nowadays. Every instrument and vocal line clear and discernable. I felt that Hell was about to be unleashed when the opening track “Nihilism” kicked off and it was a continued ride to the abyss as the CD played on.

The entire CD is filled with complicated guitar riffs and well chosen vocal parts. Yet despite my praise for the project I had an issue with “Salt In Your Wounds”. The band uses the phrase “you fucking slut” a little too much for my liking, and if not for that this track makes me feel as I am wandering a dark misty forest in the evening. That does not happen to me all that much but with God Dethroned it did. Sadly I am not able to compare this piece with the other work of the band, but I have to say overall that this is one hell of an album and is a high recommendation. This will be especially appealing to those that lean most towards the heavier stuff, but it is possible for those classic Metallers to also appreciate it. My colleague enjoyed it and felt some of the piece reminded him of Behemoth. So people are setting their own views on how to enjoy this group. Check it out – Be open minded and enjoy it as well.
