Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the forest, Korpiklaani was back and headlining another tour that was bound to increase the energy and alcohol levels of many a Metal fan in the region. Tonight’s adventure would effectively be my first Metal show of the year and considering it was going to be the return appearance of Finland’s Korpiklaani, I could think of no better way to start off 2010. The band last visited these shores when they headlined the second Paganfest USA back in May of 2009. That was an exemplary show that found Ireland’s Primordial, Finland’s Moonsorrow and Montreal’s Blackguard all on point for the causes of Metal. While my first Metal show of the year this was not my first actual show as I had gone to see legendary Blues guitarist Johnny Winter only a couple of days prior to this event. After expanding my mind with the sounds of the inspirational guitarist I felt that I was absolutely ready for the rousing blast of Folk Metal fun that Korpiklaani brings to the beer pint stocked table. Joining them for the tour would be Tyr, Swashbuckle, White Wizzard and the whole shebang would be started off by one area band. I made sure to get in early enough to see everyone because from beginning to end I knew this was going to be a fun night.

“Earache Summer Sampler 2010” by Various Artists

Artist: Various Artists
Title: “Earache Summer Sampler 2010”
Label: Earache Records
Release Date: 6/29/2010
Genre: Heavy Metal/Thrash/Grindcore
Rating: 3.75/5

If Metal is your business, then business is good or at least a whole lot better thanks to the folks over at Earache Records who are delivering this incendiary sampler of their latest bands and releases. You’ve likely been long aware of this label as they have been the herald of the underground scene for more years than I can count and at one time delivered the likes of Decapitated, Napalm Death, and even Carcass. This is a sampler that is meant to be played at critical volumes and by that I mean one that makes your neighbors fear your listening routine just a little more than they might already do. Scanning around the presentations we find Evile from the United Kingdom and a band I have seen a number of times. They are champions of the old sound but have a modern twist to them, and those dudes in White Wizzard make you feel as though you rolled back into the eighties in a good way. Conventional Thrash comes through with shining colors thanks to Bonded By Blood and Gama Bomb and while one band cites recollections of Exodus the latter band reminds of classic era Overkill in some sense. Melodic Death Metal is delivered to perfection by Order Of Ennead and one should expect this given its the side-project of members of Deicide and rising star shredder John Li. There is some molten heaviness care of Grind Core Singaporeans Wormrot and we get two songs from them. Don’t take a deep breath as its likely to be longer than the tunes provided and the rest you shall just have to learn about on your own.

Ross The Boss & Raven @ Club Europa (8/28/2009)

It’s been awhile since we’ve heard from Ross The Boss, original and founding guitarist of the mighty Manowar but now we could see what he has been up to with this Brooklyn gig. The show would find him hitting the borough with NWOBHM legends Raven and newcomers White Wizzard and Zandelle and if the pre-show announcements were correct he would be playing a lot of classic Manowar. Based on all of these factors I wanted to see as much of this show as possible so while I missed the very first band I arrived in time to see Zandelle.

Metal would make a stop in Brooklyn this evening as former Manowar guitarist Ross The Boss rallied into action with new troops under his command to deliver a crushing set of classic Manowar and material from his new release “New Metal Leader”. When you add to the mix the insanity of NWOBHM’s own Raven and a couple of other talented bands then this was sure to be a night that all in attendance would come away with special memories of. The show was at the Europa night club in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and it’s not a space that I get to all that often. The last time I was here was when the undead rocker Wednesday 13 made an appearance back in 2007, but since Ross and Raven would only be playing here for this region I knew that I had to be on point and see what the night delivered for the sake of the genre. I walked in just as local boys Zandelle were playing and had apparently missed the first band up by a few minutes which was a shame since I had curiosity about everyone who was playing this evening.

“Heavy Metal Killers” by Various Artists

Artist: Various Artists
Title: “Heavy Metal Killers”
Label: Earache Records
Release Date: 2/19/2009
Genre: Thrash Metal
Rating: 4/5

“Heavy Metal Is The Law” are the words that you see blazing in front of your eyes when you take the booklet out of this supremely crushing CD compilation and as you begin to spin the disc this is a statement that you will no doubt agree with. Heavy Metal music was reaching a new level as the NWOBHM began to do its thing and these incredible years gave us the likes of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Saxon to name a few. The genre prospered and morphed over the years into more sub-genre than can easily be tallied and while a number of them were outstanding there was little representation of what came to be known as the “Old School” or “Traditional” vibe as the decades progressed. While I’m sure that bands were still delivering this sound in some fashion, the bands that were dominating the attention of the listeners were clearly the offshoots of this original style and it was high time for it to make a return. Over the last year we have seen a number of young upstarts delivering Thrash Metal again and with bands like Mantic Ritual, Black Tide and even Warbringer doing their thing for this classic style, could the original vibe be far behind. Thanks to the bands presented on “Heavy Metal Killers” I am happy to report that it is here and ready to impress. Let’s take a look at a few of the notable tracks on this great CD.
