I’m saddened to once again return to our memorials section with more bad news but we’ve just learned that the legendary bassist of The Sweet, Mr. Steve Priest, has passed away at age 72. No COD was lined out but its been reported that his health was not too good in recent times. A statement from his former bandmate Andy Scott is below.
Andy Scott’s Statement:
“Then there was one! I am in pieces right now. Steve Priest has passed away. His wife Maureen and I have kept in contact and though his health was failing I never envisaged this moment. Never. My thoughts are with his family x. He was the best bass player I ever played with. The noise we made as a band was so powerful. From that moment in the summer of 1970 when set off on our Musical Odyssey the world opened up and the rollercoaster ride started! He eventually followed his heart and moved to the USA. First New York then LA. Rest in Peace brother. All my love.”
Historically speaking, while I’ve a recollection of enjoyed music from The Sweet for decades, it wasn’t until the Spring of 2018 when I would catch Priest’s version of the group at the Gramercy Theatre which is were my photo above comes from. I had a group of friends in from Denmark and they had the band Tragedy opening up the show and it was a night of singing along to everything and plenty of drinking. My Danish friends were on holiday after all. I don’t recall where or when I first heard the band but think it would have to stem from the single “Little Willy” which was catchy as all heck and now in my mind is nothing short of a classic. The Sweet were a band that were far more influential than they received the credit for and that was a shame. Anyone who listened to them usually said to me “hey that’s really good”. As I grew older I learned of more songs and the deeper album cuts and eventually built up quite the catalog on CD. I loved more songs than I could easily summarize here but will say that “Action”, “Fox On The Run”, “The Six-Teens”, “Ballroom Blitz” and even “Love Is Like Oxygen” are top on my list. As Scott denotes in his official statement, he is the last surviving member of the band and its my hope that he brings his version over to the states for some gigs whenever the possibility to do so becomes the case again.
As there is far too much reading about the band, I am embedding their links down below for your own examination. Rest In Peace Mr. Priest, and thank you ever so much for all the amazing music that you delivered to us. We extend heartfelt condolences to your family, friends and worldwide fans. I’ll close out with a classic rendition of one of their most popular numbers.
The Sweet are a bonafide legend in the world of classic Glam Rock. Join the bands current incarnation as they bring the “Action” to NYC. They’ll be joined by Tragedy, the ultimate Heavy Metal tribute to the Bee Gees.
The Details: I’ve been a fan of The Sweet for as long as I can remember and yet despite this few decades of appreciation have never seen the band in concert. Unless I’ve misplaced an album, there are about a dozen in my music library and while this is the US version of the group (yes there are TWO “The Sweets” in 2018), this one features original bassist Steve Priest and our old friend from ZO2 Mr. Paulie Z. and a cadre of kickass musicians. Even more exciting is the fact that Tragedy, the all Heavy Metal tribute to The Bee Gees will be opening up – so what am I getting at here? Well, thanks to the mighty minds in the Marketing division, we are putting some of the PiercingMetal readers into this show for free. Check it out down below.
When and Where: Thursday, April 26th @ Gramercy Theatre (127 East 23rd Street, NYC)
To Participate: I usually ask for three things about the band or solo artist that is playing but I have a feeling that with The Sweet being a legendary act that has retained a cult level of status that many might not be 100% up on them. That said, I am asking that you hit YouTube, Spotify and Wikipedia to familiarize yourself just a little bit and then tell me three reasons why this show is of interest to you. I’ll be picking out the submissions that speak to me the most and will be letting them know directly. Before we continue here are some of the usual guidelines to keep the process straightforward. This contest will run until supplies run out or on the morning of the show. Whichever comes first. Continue reading Win A Ticket To See The Sweet @ Gramercy Theatre On 4/26/2018→

The iconic rock band Sweet will be celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2018 having formed in 1968 in Hayes, Middlesex, England. Sweet is drawing a new generation of young fans who are being exposed to their music with the use of two of their biggest hits being featured in conjunction with two blockbuster movies, “Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 2” and “Suicide Squad.” Sweet’s hit, “Ballroom Blitz” was in the international trailer for “Suicide Squad” and received 13 million downloads. “Fox On The Run” is featured in both “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2” soundtrack and the trailer for the film. This is a quick and easy one for me and I hope you don’t mind my tossing some quick thoughts in about this single track from the upcoming soundtrack from the upcoming film “Guardians Of The Galaxy” Vol. 2. If you’ve been following the website for any amount of time you know that we love these Marvel Comics related films and they’ve been airing the teasers for this film and they look amazing. I loved the first chapter in the galactic heros saga but what was also very standout was the films soundtrack as it featured so many awesome songs. During one of the recent trailers, they played the song “Fox On The Run” by The Sweet and it’s a song that I cannot speak highly enough about.
