Gothic Rock & Roll would make a triumphant and long overdue visit to New York City as The 69 Eyes arrived on our shores for the very first time in their career as a band. Singer Jyrki69 has long been an admirer of the “New York Scene” and sounds from the seventies and eighties and from them formed the band that we are finally able to enjoy for ourselves. Hailing from Finland the guys in the group take a far different approach to their music and instead of blistering displays of Power Metal, have brought a more streetwise sound that has influence in the Rock greats of the past. The 69 Eyes have more in common with KISS and The New York Dolls than they do with Nightwish and Sonata Arctica and give the whole thing a dark monster movie feel. The scene for tonight would be the Bowery Ballroom and this great venue with its capacity of almost 600 was crowded but not over-packed. While I had hoped for sold-out status I still felt this was great for the band, as with the newest album “Devils” hitting our shores only recently it would still be a round of positives. Having reviewed the album and knowing a handful of numbers previously this would not be a night of confusion in terms of the material. I was happy to have the heads up advantage.

PiercingMetal Talks To Jyrki 69 from The 69 Eyes (3/5/2006)

The 69 Eyes are a Gothic Hard Rock sensation around most of the world and have been doing their thing for about fifteen years or so with the USA fans only recently being able to enjoy one of their albums unless they were resourceful enough to dig deeper into their catalog. I’m proud to admit that I had slightly more background in their wares than some peers but the album “Devils” is the first from the bands extensive catalog of music to hit our Shores and to celebrate the release a U.S. tour was planned at long last. I had the opportunity to sit and talk with lead singer, the enigmatic Jyrki 69 before their New York show at The Bowery Ballroom. The hustle and bustle of a backstage dressing room the night of a big appearance is not the best place to conduct some lengthy discussion so I kept it brief and to the point. We talked about his new music and life as Lord of the Rock and Roll Vampires. Below is our transcribed conversation and I hope you find it as interesting as I did speaking to him.

PiercingMetal: We are here with Jyrki69 of The 69 Eyes who is making their very first appearance in New York and I ask how come now with the band being formed in the 90’s, whets the feeling on coming here now.

Jyrki 69: Actually since the late 80’s.

Release Date: 10/25/2005
Genre: Gothic Rock & Roll
Rating: 8/10

Straight out of Finland comes a true Gothic Rock sensation and with “Devils” The 69 Eyes give us their first official US release. You might have heard of them in some fashion recently given all the attention that HIM is generating or perhaps you own the “Viva La Bands” CD where Bam Marguera showcases their excellent track “Lost Boys”. Given his involvement in HIM and the constant presentation of the Heartagram logo of that band his interest in The 69 Eyes can only be a positive move for the group to obtain a larger audience here in the States and perhaps other Countries as well. Before this CD was released I had only been familiar with the track “Brandon Lee” and “Gothic Girl”. Fans of the band might say I am missing out on some better material but I enjoyed those two enough to look deeper into the group. I was glad that I did for on “Devils” there is a healthy dose of Hard Rock with a very apparent Gothic edge.
