First things first – and music always comes first in Wacken. We are proud to announce the following bands for 2020:
One of the highlights of next year’s Wacken Open Air will definitely be… the mighty JUDAS PRIEST! True legends celebrating “50 Heavy Metal Years” at the Holy Ground – a match made in headbanging heaven! JUDAS PRIEST have shaped heavy metal as we know it and we are incredibly honoured to welcome them to the festival for the fourth time.
Vikings and Metal go well together as we all know. There is no band out there that brings the fire, the screaming, and the general kickass awesomeness of both worlds better together than AMON AMARTH. Artist: Sodom Title: “Lords Of Depravity” Vol. II Label: SPV Records Release Date: 7/13/2010 Genre: Thrash Metal Rating: 4/5
Even though I fully realize that Sodom is one of the “Big Three” when it comes to the German Thrash Metal movement, I was never one of those listeners that followed their career. It was nothing personal of course because what I heard I enjoyed to some extent, but when it came down to it they were a band that friends followed while I opted for the likes of Kreator and Destruction. That being said, it was great to get my hands on a copy of “Lords Of Depravity 2” since it not only gives you a documentary that others of its kind will fall before in humility but it also presents the bands full concert from Wacken Open Air in celebration of their 25th Anniversary. With the two unique parts, I have decided to separate my views on the release so please read on.
DVD1: “Historical Depravity”: The first DVD is a look at the bands time from the years 1995 up until the anniversary show in 2007 so before you watch this part you might want to skim through “Lords Of Depravity, Vol. I” again to refresh your Metal memory banks. Like its predecessor, the documentary is completely in German, but you do get sub-titles that will help you understand what is going on. Of course if you speak or understand German then you are ahead of the rest of us. The documentary runs about 200 minutes so you are assured to get your fill of all the details on their lives and I found that to be something to applaud about. Without ruining the sum of the piece, I will say how I found it interesting that even a band like Sodom found the “Grunge Era” of music affecting their livelihood. Living in the states, I felt that only our music industry had given up on the glories of the super powered Metal way, but apparently this resonated around the globe as well. It was also interesting to learn about Tom’s participation in a “Metal Drinking Songs’ band as that seemed like a lot of fun. I would love to find a copy of that someday even though I don’t speak a word of German. Well, outside of “Prost” that is, and I guess for that kind of band that is all I need to know. Since this documentary picks up where the first volume left off we find the band members examining the albums that were released during this time and the members of the group that Sodom had on each of them. Artist: Sodom Title: “Lords Of Depravity” Label: SPV Records Release Date: 2/21/2006 Genre: Thrash Metal Rating: 7.5/10
Sodom is old school Metal and it’s a title that the band holds proudly with horns raised to the air. For over 20 years the band has delivered traditional styled Thrash that falls along the lines of Slayer and Venom never switching style based on the times. This factor alone has made their hard core fan base all the more loyal and ravenous as the years go by. This double DVD from SPV Records is more than a healthy dose of what the band is about and what makes them special to their fans. The double DVD Set is broken up into two sections, with the first one being a 180 minute documentary on the group that features footage and commentary from members and associates. The years covered in this footage runs from 1982-1995 and according to some liner notes the band had wanted to release this earlier but were not able to until SPV was able to do it with this package. The documentary while very comprehensive visually and in its content is in the German language. There is an option to have English sub-titles and this will help out the die-hard in their enjoyment of it. Yet when you are faced with the need to read 180 minutes of copy and focus on it I feel that the casual fan or one who seeks to learn more about the group will find this annoying. If you understand German it has to be fantastic since a 180 minute history on any group is a great thing to get these days. Continue reading “Lords Of Depravity” by Sodom→
Artist: Sodom Venue: B.B. King Blues Club (New York, NY) Opener: Finntroll Date: 1/8/2005 Label: SPV Records
The arrival of Finntroll and Sodom proved that it would be one of those interesting nights at B.B. King Blues Club once again. The two bands would be the only groups performing and while Finntroll preceded Sodom, this was clearly a co-headlining show without any question with a seemingly larger audience presence than that of Sodom. From Germany, Sodom brings one of those classic Thrash sounds and it has rarely changed much over the course of their history. Finntroll is a different story altogether as the band mixes Black and Pagan Metal styling with Finnish Polka or Humppa. The end result delivers a far different taste of music. To be honest I was primarily there for Finntroll and many reports had come in saying that the line up should have been switched with more audience showing support for this Finnish export. Here are some details on the evening’s fun. Continue reading Finntroll & Sodom @ B.B. King Blues Club (1/8/2006)→
