Greetings and Happy Thursday my Friends, I’m excited to share the news that today is the 14th birthday of the PiercingMetal website. So much has changed here since we first announced the domains existence to the masses some 5,110 days ago and I am happy to also say that it’s been busier than ever at the Metal Media Command HQ in terms of things to do and share with those who find our voice interesting to them. Legacy readers might remember the visual down below when the premise was a lot more simple and straight forward.
Back in 2005 it was only going to be reviews and photography but so many changes have happened since I brazenly referred to it as “New York’s Definitive Metal Resource” and quite honestly that was our Developers idea and no one wants to argue with the person building the thing so it stuck. I lined out a majority of the brands changes in last year’s birthday announcement (seen HERE for reference) and in the interest of time on a very busy morning for me, I will not repeat them. I will say that I did make some cosmetic changes and have filed all of our content under what amount to three distinct disciplines. There are Reviews, Features and Pop Culture sections and each of them bring worlds of awesome to your device of choice. As I compose this update for you, there are more than 6,200 posts to enjoy and I’ve scheduled 10 more to go live in the coming days. My plan is to push the content base past the 6.5K mark by the end of the year but a lot of factors are involved in doing something like that. Since news happens every day and I find myself toiling at the keys in response its probably doable even before the year ends so let the challenge begin. In any event, the new tagline going forward is “Where Heavy Music and Pop Culture Collide” and I feel it sums up what we are about even better than ever before. Hello my friends in the world of Heavy Metal music and Geekdom, I’m here to share the news that today is the PiercingMetal website’s thirteenth birthday and that it was officially announced to the masses on this very day back in 2005. It’s been quite a thrill ride since that fateful day when I said to myself that I would invest a whole lot of time into the process of administrating a website. On this “Lucky 13th” milestone I’m here to share some thoughts about how different it’s become from the bygone days and how much the scene around us has changed
When the website launched it was 100% objective review and photo galleries and that was based on it being sold as an online magazine for such topics. It was presented to the masses in the conventional HTML and was driven by a MySQL database. I loved the flow of it and how easy it was to find things but with such a rigid programming code to follow any necessary changes required days of modifying hundreds and then thousands of code pages. Some of you might remember how the website looked from 2005-2014 and for the newbies I’ve added in a photo below.
Good afternoon my fine Metal friends, I’m here to tell you that today is the 12th Anniversary of the PiercingMetal.com outlet. In some sense it feels like yesterday that I decided to branch out on my own from the couple of brands that I contributed to and at others it does not and instead feels like a lifetime. My how the times have changed for this stuff over the years. Back then the magazines were still one of the best ways to enjoy the myriad of Metal bands that were out there but unless you were reading the European offerings you rarely would have heard of so many of the bands that are now almost common discussion among fans. Facebook and Twitter were still pretty new and now they are a focused part of our day and yeah I’m using them for the website on a regular basis so I hope that you are with us for that social networking ride.
Since I always do a look back on how this site started against what it is now I have to say that it’s a world of difference from the original premise that was launched twelve years ago. Back then, I only wanted it to be reviews and concert photos and yeah I did those in massive amounts but I was never going to blog about stuff. Then a blog was created which let me discuss so many other side topics that related to the stuff on the once separate review side. I was also never going to use these newfangled Social Networks for site promotion but I am using all of them nowadays. I wanted to make the whole site into WordPress and a conversion began in 2014 and I’m happy to report that PiercingMetal.com is now 85% in WordPress and constantly working towards full transition. There are still a few hundred or so legacy articles that bear some re-editing and format for inclusion in the way it looks now. The constant happenings in the music world today find the older items taking a backseat while the more “spur of the moment” items are addressed. Though I don’t treat the outlet as a newsfeed site like the great Bravewords.com and MelodicRock.com handle, I do offer up the touring plans, the band lineup changes and the occasional record label signing to keep some level of newsy article being featured when it’s best to do so. Creatively speaking our archive of content has just surpassed the “4600” mark in terms of postings and these posts span a wide gamut of topical review, photo galleries and features that inform on numerous different interests. When I merged the once side blog into the main presentation I decided to also up my game in the Pop Culture stuff so as you peruse the Comics and On Screen or Toy posts you will see there is a lot more there. It makes sense since bands write and star in comic books and there are numerous toys for them as well. Continue reading PiercingMetal Is Twelve Years Old Today (2005-2017)→
Hey there my Metal Legions, I am proud to announce that I am turning it up to “11” here on PiercingMetal.com and if you are not following me based on the hour that I’m making this post – Today is the 11th Anniversary of PiercingMetal’s launch. Yessir, way back when I decided to deliver this Metal media outlet, I opted with 4/4 as my launching date since I am a former drummer and it was fun to make that our birth date to the world. Of course it would have been even more awesome to have launched in 2004 to be 4-4-4 but oh well, the idea hadn’t come to me until sometime in January of 2005. After a couple of months of plotting and planning and idea brainstorming – it launched. Tada and welcome, what an amazing ride its been so far.
Looking back to compare the site from the very beginning against how it is in the present day is quite jolting for me because I remember how it begin as a straight HTML website with some focused areas of review along with a pretty healthy calendar of things to in the region. Over time there were some additional review areas added and a comprehensive photo section which I felt added to the scope of offerings quite nicely. Then blogging became a lot more prominent so one was created to discuss a whole other area of things that the fans of our music also enjoyed and of course were also interests of mine. That Pop Culture stuff sure did let me expand the brands reach and meet even more interesting people along the way. As the outlet approached passed its 9th Anniversary, a complete redo was put into play and it merged the classic review side in with the standalone blog side turning the two sided coin into one big WordPress offering. With so many parts to integrate, many legacy items are still works in progress and that is because its more important to keep the presentations coming and engaging your interests. I have to say that I love having everything in one place with each and every article or photograph relating to one another. It’s much more dynamic than it was able to be back in the day.
The last eleven years have been both a fascinating and fun ride for sure. I’ve met some truly incredible band members and the folks that allow my work to get done as best as possible. It’s really awesome to be able to speak about such talent on this medium and shine lights on stuff that the world needs to know about. According to some of the record keeping I do, I’ve written a few thousand review items, saw about 1500 bands in concert and shot about 75k photographs. The process is sometimes exhausting but so worth it if you make any sort of difference for music that you are passionate about. For the past bunch of Anniversaries I’ve been finding various representations of the number of the anniversary to feature in this kind of posting but I have to say that not only is it getting harder and harder to find them as we tack on the years; there is just too much on the creative plate to offer up more than one of them this time around. I would be exaggerating if I said that I was planning on resting on my laurels as result of the anniversary. I’ve actually just gotten home from seeing Sonata Arctica perform and later on tonight will be seeing Uli Jon Roth at B.B. King’s. I’ll celebrate this 11th year by keeping out in the fields of Metal and media. If you are someone who has followed the site from the beginning, I say thanks for all the tireless support and if you are new to the presentation please accept this welcome to our work thought. I’ve a lot planned in addition to continuing the complete integration of my legacy content which still continues based on just how much had been done. Hopefully you are following the social networks where various things are shared and discussed. There are links around the main page to guide you to the lot of them. Thanks once again and now the climb to year 12 begins.
