Type-O-Negative are Heavy Metal’s true Lords Of Flatbush and when they hit home turf for a concert the room is madness. This time around the band was performing with Finland’s Lordi and we were on point to bring you the full scoop. Scroll past the logo below to see it all. Stay negative.

It may have only been a few months ago that we last caught them performing at this very same venue, but there is just something incredible about Type-O-Negative doing a gig on home ground. Whenever these Brooklyn natives announce that they are stopping by for a couple of shows, the tickets sell faster than the fans can get their hands on them and often many are left saddened at the entry gate to the club. Given they have been one of my favorite groups for some time I like to catch them when they perform in the area and since they were absent from the touring and recording scene for a couple of years, attending this show would be a no-brainer for me. I did wonder if they would do the exact same set as that previous show as the band was rather notorious for that, but we shall see I mused to myself as I made my way inside the Fillmore NY. As I had expected in advance, the event was sold out. For this leg of their tour supporting the album “Dead Again”, the guys would bring with them that monster of a band Lordi. This band is a whole lot of fun in the visual sense if you have yet to see them and a continuation of bringing great acts on the road with them. Those who attended the early shows back in May will recall how Heavy Metal legends Celtic Frost opened up for them and while some of the Old School purists balked at the idea of such a group having to come up first, at the end of the day it did them good as it introduced them to fans who may have been too young to appreciate them during their own heyday. Twin Method was also on the bill as the startup band but I didn’t get to see them at all. Now as the venue grew dark it was time for Lordi’s arrival and their chance to make these fans their own. The great Type O Negative had returned with a killer album called “Dead Again” and would perform with Celtic Frost as their direct support for a show that was documented in full on THIS LINK. Now please enjoy the full gallery of images that we captured during the allowed time in the pit.
Type O Negative had finally returned with the incredible “Dead Again” CD and their NYC show was sold out quickly and required that an additional night be added to keep the maniacs at bay. The show featured both Celtic Frost and Brand New Sin as their openers and while we would miss BNS, we were in place for the direct support and main talent that night. Having been a fan of Type O Negative for as long as I can remember, I am always looking forward to when these “Lords Of Flatbush” return home to deliver their unique brand of Gothic meets Doom Metal. The show tonight would be one of two booked events and each was an immediate sellout as far as the tickets were concerned. I’ve found this to be the case whenever they perform in the vicinity and remember times when they played the fabled, but now closed L’Amour in Brooklyn to nights at Roseland Ballroom. I had found their shows to always be a good time and always to a capacity audience in the venue. Yet these tickets seemed to go a lot faster than usual because the music attending crowds of New York had not seen Type-O on the stage for a few years. The announcement of their return would be well met and this run of dates would also feature the Metal might of the legendary Celtic Frost as their special guest opener. Brand New Sin would be the ones to start it all off and Irving Plaza, oops I mean “The Fillmore NY at Irving Plaza” would be the venue it all went down in. The new name is a result of the Live Nation company purchasing the venue and giving it a slight makeover – but don’t worry it is still pretty much the exact place that we have all seen shows at over the years. “Hallelujah it’s finally here!” Yes readers I can reflect genuine levels of enthusiasm to you as it has been about four years since we heard new material from Brooklyn’s own Type-O-Negative. A sigh of relief will come from all their legions of fans who some of which had wondered if the band was done and now find the Lords Of Flatbush armed with a new record label and material that clearly shows that they are “Dead Again”. It’s an album that finds the band morphing once again in the overall resulting sound but they are also revisiting some elements of their past successes. I found “Dead Again” to be a slight mix of that which we loved about both “Bloody Kisses” and “October Rust” – it’s a hard rocking album but not as heavy as their “World Coming Down” piece, and here we find those elements working hand in hand with the Punk influenced quickness of “Life Is Killing Me”. Fans know by now that while they change a little with each recording that TON has always managed to keep a certain essence in their sound – so why change now. Artist: Type-O-Negative Title: “The Best Of Type O Negative” Label: Roadrunner Records Release Date: 9/26/2006 Genre: Gothic Heavy Metal Rating: 4/5
Slamming down a mix of Gothic meets Doom Heavy Metal is Type-O-Negative from Brooklyn, New York. The band formed out of the ashes of Peter Steele’s Thrash/Hardcore band Carnivore would blend interesting melodies along with some crunching Doom-laden riffs ala Black Sabbath. The mixture would find them being labeled as a tad Gothic and the singer’s often dismal outlook on life and humanity along with references to death and suicide made him become an idol to the Goth scenesters. However if you listen to Type-O-Negative music and review their back catalog you will find a number of different styles present on each release. They use certain melodies on regular occasion to tie the releases together and as a result offer a little sense of consistency from record to record. Despite it all Type-O-Negative does not fall under one sub-genre classification and instead falls under several different explorations which make each album an individual standing in a crowd. This “Best Of” collection features a healthy sample of the music released while the group was under the Roadrunner Records artist roster. Albums such as “Slow, Deep & Hard”, “Bloody Kisses”, “October Rust”, “World Coming Down” and “Life Is Killing Me” each bear some representation while their “faux live” CD “Origin Of The Feces” and their first compilation release “Least Worst Of” do not get any. The twelve selections find the heaviest focus on the bands two blockbuster releases “Bloody Kisses” and “October Rust”, which are in my opinion the two albums you must own after you taste this sample offering of their content. This would have been better as a double CD anthology piece but doing one disc allows Roadrunner to guarantee its purchase among old and new fans alike. Members of Type-O-Negative on the featured tracks are Peter Steele (bass/vocals), Kenny Hickey (guitar/vocals), Josh Silver (keyboards), Johnny Kelly (drums) and Sal Abruscato (1st drummer).
