The Original Misfits Reunion Decimates The Denver Riot Fest

Logo - The Misfits

And they said it would never happen but last night in Denver, Colorado at a calm little function they call the “Riot Fest” – a bit of music history took place. It was an event that pretty much everyone had given up hope on ever occurring but when the news was announced a few months ago a nervous countdown happened among the fans while thousands scrambled for tickets to see this one act only. I am speaking of none other than the mighty and macabre Misfits whose original members Glenn Danzig, Jerry Only and Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein put the differences aside and offered up a reunion performance that will surely go down in history. They were joined by Acey Slade on second guitar and the inimitable Dave Lombardo (formerly of Slayer) on the drums and below the poster you will find a few of the audience recorded clips of the evenings happening.

I didn’t snag too many clips for you and instead will leave the rest up to your own discovery. I did however locate a few of my favorites and am sharing them below. As I watched them I was slavering at the idea of actually being at this event. At least with these we are all flies on the wall and that is better than nothing. Many thanks to those fans who recorded them without too much bopping around. Your dedication to fellow fans is commendable.

“Friday The 13th” (Single) by Misfits

Artist: Misfits
Title: “Friday The 13th” (Single)
Label: Misfits Records
Release Date: 5/13/2016
Genre: Horror Punk
Rating: 4/5

Hailing from the upcoming EP that bears the same name comes the title track single of “Friday The 13th” by those purveyors of prime Horror Punk in the Misfits. It’s the perfect downloadable present for your mobile device music library and of course has been timed to capture the spirit of this haunted non-holiday date. The song is a catchy one and has been penned by Only who sings (of course) and plays the bass while Jerry Other and Eric Arce handle the guitar and drum duties. The groove is pretty straightforward in terms of a Misfits track and is very melodic when it gets to the chorus. I think that you’ll find yourself singing along rather quickly when that part comes up because I was. The end was very brooding and dramatic which sold it even more for me. Its hard to describe for you here though and its better to listen to. I loved the cover art which you might notice shows the famous Misfits Fiend sporting a slightly Jason-esque design which I thought was awesome.

“Horror XMas” by Misfits

Artist: Misfits
Title: “Horror Xmas”
Label: Misfits Records
Release Date: 12/3/13
Genre: Horror Punk
Rating: 4/5

I have to admit that I was sad to have missed out on this particular holiday horror treat when it first fell off of Santa’s musical sleigh but I don’t think the readers will mind me unwrapping it for their edification on this Christmas Eve of 2015. The three track EP by the legendary Misfits is a fun filled stocking stuffer that delivers a quick ride down the chimney and back with Punked up versions of songs like the theme from “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” in its “You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch”. As it played I was amazed at just how many lines of that classic cartoon that I knew. I guess it worked when they aired it and influenced my young mind so many years ago. The “Island Of Misfit Toys” is a new original that owes a little bit to the Rankin Bass cartoon “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer” and their own Island Of Misfit Toys. The song is driving and very melodic and showcases a different side of The Misfits that might appease listeners based on its difference. It all closes out with a favorite tune of mine with “Blue Christmas” which was famously sung by Elvis Presley and an unnamed little girl in “The Year Without A Santa Claus” cartoon special.

Want To See The Misfits in NYC on 12/16/2012?

“Happy Halloween New York City!!!!” Oh wait……that was months ago so why am I wishing it to you all with December well underway. Let me explain. Recently that nasty storm Sandy really did a number on the city and in its wake many shows were cancelled while others rescheduled to later dates and this finds the mighty Misfits doing their annual Halloween show just in time for the Christmas Slay-son…. The band will be joined by Attack, Japanther and Heart Of The Matter to make it all the more interesting. I wonder how many fans will be showing up for this Horrorday Celebration in costume. Perhaps this will see the beginning of a “Merry Mayhem Misfits Christmas” theme of shows like we find Twisted Sister doing these last few years. All I know is that I am excited to be attending as press and thanks to the fine folks at the Highline Ballroom some of the PiercingMetal fans will be joining in for the fun.
