Want To See Portnoy, Sheehan, Macalpine & Sherinian in Concert in NYC On 11/18/2012?

Poster - Portnoy Sheehan

Wow. Talk about a powerhouse lineup of accomplished musicians. Mike Portnoy, Billy Sheehan, Tony Macalpine and Derek Sherinian. Outstanding levels of talent in each of them and a truly juggernaut level of musical assault when they combine forces. It’s beyond exciting that the band will be playing their only US Appearance for 2012 at the legendary B.B. King Blues Club but even more awesome to be able to treat some of the PiercingMetal readers to the show thanks to the powers that be for the venue. Here’s the official description from their website

Reflections & Photos From KISS Expos Past (2002-2004)

And now a little rewind for you…

NY/NJ KISS Expo

KISS seems to be getting more attention than ever thanks to their smoking new CD “Sonic Boom”, the “Gene Simmons Family Jewels” TV show and the always rousing concerts that they do for sold out audiences worldwide.  With this being the case, I felt that I should go back into my personal archives and add some fun never before seen images to the PiercingMetal Blog so the readers of our adventures can enjoy them in terms of some KISS related fun.  After all, they do no real good by being in a random folder on a hard drive only seen once in a blue moon by the occasional curious visitor to the Metal command center.

That being said, this little side story is not about KISS themselves but more about an event that was called the NY/NJ KISS Expo.  It was an annual affair that was put together by Richie Ranno (of the band Starz) and was the means for those who sold KISS memorabilia and those who collected it to mingle together along with musicians that had some part of their history connected with KISS or were just interested in being a part of the fun.  My friends had been going to this convention for years already but my first go round would be in 2002 but I could not find any photos outside of the scanned ticket below.

KISS Expo 2002: Your Ticket To KISS Purchases

This event was in Hackensack, NJ and only $16 bucks to get in.  That was cool to know since you would end up spending hundreds more in terms of KISS things you might have had interest in.  If I manage to find any photos from that event I will edit the narrative to allow them to fit in.  So far there seems to be only one which you get below.

“Live In Super Overdrive” [Blu-ray] by Billy Idol

Artist: Billy Idol
Title: “Live In Super Overdrive” [Blu-ray]
Label: Eagle Vision
Release Date: 11/17/2009
Genre: Rock
Rating: 3.75/5

Released in tandem with the standard edition DVD comes the higher definition version on Blu-ray. Fans of the rocker should be aware that there are no real differences in the content being offered up but if they have the means to enjoy the video and aural sonics of the Blu-ray medium, then they should investigate this one as opposed to the standard. My views about the release remain the same so I am presenting them to you below.

Originally presented as a segment on PBS’s “Soundstage” program, this concert by Billy Idol finds the legendary performer delivering a rocking set that features a few more songs than were presented during the programs initial broadcast. That fact alone makes it something that the singers longtime fans will definitely want to get their hands on. Idol fans should be advised that this is not a vintage performance but instead one that was recorded earlier in 2009, but that doesn’t matter because if you have seen Billy Idol’s shows of late then you will know that he is better than ever at what he does. The show comes to us from the oft windy city of Chicago at its Congress Theater during the heat of the summer, yet while a hotter than hell show there is something incredibly cool about it and this comes from the singer himself as he remains collected in the premise of delivering his iconic catalog with a few new treats for his fans.

“Mythology” by Derek Sherinian

Artist: Derek Sherinian
Title: “Mythology”
Label: InsideOut Music
Release Date: 6/2004
Genre: Progressive Rock
Rating: 7/10

The newest release by Derek Sherinian is yet another treat for not only the fan of Progressive music but also those that enjoy a most creative use of the keyboards. Derek seems to have taken them into the 21st Century even further with rich colors and experimentation in his music. He also makes sure to have a cast of talented players joining him on each CD. People participating this time around are Zakk Wylde, John Sykes, Allan Holdsworth, Simon Phillips, Brian Tichy, Tony Franklin, Marco Mendoza and others. This cast of musical luminaries assures you that the music while fun at time plays no games. It is intelligent and well composed. It also is a progression from his last release and that is what one expects from a professional like Sherinian.
