Hey friends, I am back with more comic book solicitations for the month of October and for a change I am not skipping a day because tomorrow is the New York Comic Con and I will have my hands full for sure. Let’s get right down to business shall we?
BASKETFUL OF HEADS #1
written by JOE HILL
art by LEOMACS
backup story art by CREDIT
cover by REIKO MURAKAMI
card stock variant cover by JOSHUA MIDDLETON
The rain lashes the grassy dunes of Brody Island, and seagulls scream above the bay. A slender figure in a raincoat carries a large wicker basket, which looks like it might be full of melons…covered by a bloodstained scrap of the American flag.
This is the story of June Branch, a young woman trapped with four cunning criminals who have snatched her boyfriend for deranged reasons of their own. Now she must fight for her life with the help of an impossible 8th-century Viking axe that can pass through a man’s neck in a single swipe—and leave the severed head still conscious and capable of supernatural speech.
Each disembodied head has a malevolent story of its own to tell, and it isn’t long before June finds herself in a desperate struggle to hack through their lies and manipulations…racing to save the man she loves before time runs out.
Plus, in the premiere chapter of the backup story “Sea Dogs,” which sails across all the Hill House Comics titles!

Now we are onto the new launches from DC Comics for those who are following our Pop Culture comic books focuses. There are not a whole lot of brand new first issues launching this month but the summer is officially approaching so we have that lull and the focus becomes hitting the movies and even going outside much more than hunkering down in your respective cave reading comic books. As always there are more continuing series running but I don’t post those and instead focus on the brand new. Images and text original from DC Comics media resources and my closing editorial is all me. Let’s look.
EVENT LEVIATHAN #1: The groundbreaking and always-inventive team of writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Alex Maleev (Jinxworld’s SCARLET, Marvel’s Daredevil) reunite on a mystery thriller that stretches across the DC Universe and touches every character from Batman to Superman to the Question to Talia al Ghul. With startling ease, a newly dangerous and aggressive Leviathan wipes out all its competition and now turns its sights to molding the world into its vision of order. Can the new threat’s growth be stopped…and who’s guiding its new agents of chaos?

SUPERMAN YEAR ONE #1: From the burning world of Krypton to the bucolic fields of Kansas, the first chapter of SUPERMAN YEAR ONE tracks Clark Kent’s youth in Kansas, as he comes to terms with his strange powers and struggles to find his place in our world. DC BLACK LABEL is proud to present the definitive origin of Superman as rendered by the legendary comics creators Frank Miller and John Romita Jr.! PRESTIGE FORMAT

PiercingMetal Thoughts: So as you can see not a lot of brand-new launches and with these two I will most likely be waiting until they are in a single collected edition. I need to move some of my single issues over to storage or sell them off to make some room. That’s unless I love the series when I peruse them on the shelves but what about you readers? Will you be picking up either of these new series? Chime in down below and I will see you next time around.
Whew. I hope that you readers made it out of those last few days of absolute polar temperatures. I barely made it to the corner for milk which is a MUST have for the morning coffee. Today is Super Bowl Sunday and will put the New England Patriots against the Los Angeles Rams and while we are not at all sports fans here, I do hope that the Rams destroy the Patriots since I am tired of them. What I am a fan of is the comic book scene and there are a bunch of cool launches coming from DC Comics this month. Let’s take a look.
FEMALE FURIES #1: All their lives the Female Furies have been raised to be the meanest, most cunning and most ruthless fighting force on all of Apokolips. So why are Granny Goodness’ girls left behind every time the men go to war? With the might of New Genesis hanging over the planet, and the Forever People making mincemeat out of Darkseid’s army, Granny thinks it’s about time that changed. And so, Big Barda, Aurelie, Mad Harriet, Lashina, Bernadeth and Stompa set out to beat the boys at their own game. Little do they know the game is rigged—and one accidental murder could spell disaster for them all! FEMALE FURIES is an exciting new miniseries starring some of Jack Kirby’s coolest Fourth World characters by the writer of SHADE, THE CHANGING GIRL and the artist of PLASTIC MAN!
written by CECIL CASTELLUCCI; art by ADRIANA MELO; cover by MITCH GERADS
HIGH LEVEL #1: Hundreds of years after the world ended and human society was rebuilt from scratch, a self-interested smuggler is forced to traverse a new continent of danger and mystery to deliver a child messiah to High Level, a mythical city at the top of the world from which no one has ever returned. Don’t miss the start of a new series from writer Rob Sheridan, co-creator of Nine Inch Nails’ groundbreaking Year Zero alternate-reality game!
Let’s keep the comic book reveals for the month going and over to the DC Comics side of the fence. There are some interesting launches this month along with a few anniversary issues so let’s not dance anymore and just get down to the business. Here we go.
YOUNG JUSTICE #1: Superboy! Wonder Girl! Robin! Impulse! Amethyst! They’re all united in YOUNG JUSTICE #1, the debut issue of a brand-new series that also introduces new heroes Teen Lantern and Jinny Hex! When the nightmare dimension known as Gemworld invades Metropolis, these teen heroes reunite to deal with the situation—but they’re shocked to discover the battle may be the key to the return of Conner Kent, a.k.a. Superboy! This mix of fan favorites and new legacy heroes will be the center point for some of the biggest goings-on at DC! As if that weren’t enough, Bendis reunites with all-star artist Patrick Gleason (SUPERMAN, ACTION COMICS, GREEN LANTERN CORPS) to bring the new heroes of DC’s Wonder Comics to life!
written by BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS; art and cover by PATRICK GLEASON
NAOMI #1: DC’s biggest, newest mystery starts here! When a fight between Superman and Mongul crashes into a small Northwestern town, Naomi (last name?) begins a quest to uncover the last time a super-powered person visited her home—and how that might tie into her own origins and adoption. Follow Naomi’s journey on a quest that will take her to the heart of the DC Universe and unfold a universe of ideas and stories that have never been seen before. Join writers Brian Michael Bendis, David Walker and breakout artist Jamal Campbell in Wonder Comics’ massively ambitious new series and star…NAOMI.
Hey friends, I am back straight away with the stuff coming out from DC Comics because I’ve got a whole lot of stuff to attend to. As you read this I am heading to the annual WinterCon that is being held at the Resorts World Casino in Jamaica Queens. If that adventure is of interest to you, be sure to hit our Official Instagram to see all of the Cosplay that I will be snapping photos of. Now let’s get onto the comic books that are hitting the racks this month if they are a first issue or special edition.
THE BATMAN WHO LAUGHS #1: “A Batman who laughs is a Batman who always wins.” Left rattled by the events of DARK NIGHTS: METAL, Bruce Wayne must come face to face with the nightmares spawned from the Dark Multiverse. But even though evil devoured evil in the collapse of Challengers Mountain, the Dark Knight still has his doubts. He discovers that the Batman Who Laughs not only survived the fight with The Joker at the end of METAL, but now he is enacting a sinister plan across the Multiverse—something both terrifying and oddly familiar. But when Bruce Wayne realizes the only way to stop this madman is to kill him, he must consider violating the very rule Batman won’t break…the same rule that created this insatiable villain—the Batman Who Laughs!
written by SCOTT SNYDER; art and cover by JOCK
BATMAN AND THE OUTSIDERS #1: When the quest for justice drives Batman into some morally ambiguous areas, he calls in the most moral man he knows: Jefferson Pierce, a.k.a. Black Lightning, and his team of operatives known as the Outsiders! Several years ago Batman personally put the Barrera family into hiding after they suffered through terrible experiments at the hands of an organization called the Ark. Now all but one of them has turned up dead…and Batman needs to locate Sofia Barrera before the wrong people get their hands on her—and her surprising power! But it wouldn’t be Batman without a hidden agenda, would it? And when Black Lightning, Katana, the Signal and Orphan find out what Batman is really up to, their every loyalty will be called into question!
