Mike Garson is the CELEBRATING DAVID BOWIE band leader after having made his mark on numerous Bowie albums, including his much talked about masterly solo on the “Aladdin Sane” track. Garson was Bowie’s longest and most frequent band member. They performed together for both David’s first and last concerts in the United States as well as 1,000 concerts around the globe in between. Read an interview with the U.K.’s NME that Garson recently conducted here.

Celebrating David Bowie Adds Earl Slick & Bernard Fowler To Tour

To many fans of his music, the loss of David Bowie is still a thing that’s hard to come to terms with and that makes this exciting celebration of his music all the more wonderful. Check out the official press release along with the dates. I’ll return at the close with some editorial thoughts.

The Press Release:
Celebrating David Bowie is excited to announce the addition of musicians Earl Slick (guitar) and Bernard Fowler (vocalist) to the North American leg of the recently announced 2018 tour. After performing rapturously received and critically lauded shows earlier this year, Celebrating David Bowie returns with a brand new Bowie show spanning his entire career with a new show in Mexico City that was also just announced. More than just a mere salute, Celebrating David Bowie keeps Bowie’s music alive with musicians who worked closely with him throughout his career and other top musicians greatly influenced by him.

Guitarist Earl Slick worked on landmark Bowie albums such as Diamond Dogs, Young Americans and Reality, among others, and toured extensively with him. Says Slick: “I’m happy to announce that I am officially joining my longtime DB band mates starting on the February leg of the ‘Celebrating David Bowie’ tour. So put on your red shoes and I’ll see you all then.” Vocalist Bernard Fowler is known for his work with The Rolling Stones and other iconic artists. Both Slick and Fowler will join legendary Bowie touring and recording keyboardist, and CdB band leader, Mike Garson–who collaborated with Bowie for longer than any other player–guitarist and previous Bowie band leader Gerry Leonard (A Reality Tour), and Bowie’s Let’s Dance/Serious Moonlight Tour bassist Carmine Rojas. Between them, they have over 30 years experience of recording, writing and playing live with Bowie.

Also joining the tour will be CdB 2017 standout Fishbone‘s Angelo Moore and 2017 Grammy nominee Gaby Moreno as well as special guests and other former Bowie band members who will make surprise appearances along the way.

The 2017 Grammy Nominations Are Here

Hey it’s that time of the year again for the Grammy Award nominations and since its always a fun talking point to present the artists that our reader demographic are most interested in. I’m speaking of course about the Rock and Metal categories with a touch of Alternative thrown in for good measure. I’ll be adding my own personal choice below each category and I’ll be polling you at the close. Let’s go.

Best Rock Performance:
“Joe (Live From Austin City Limits)” — Alabama Shakes
“Don’t Hurt Yourself” — Beyonce´ Featuring Jack White
“Blackstar” — David Bowie
“The Sound Of Silence” — Disturbed
“Heathens” — Twenty One Pilots

PiercingMetal’s Pick: Wow Beyonce in the Rock Category! What is this musical world coming to? I guess we shall see her being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next. Moving on, I’m going to hope that the late great David Bowie wins the award since he left us with so much over the years that it would be a great way to respect his passing and creative genius. Disturbed also did a bang up job on the Simon and Garfunkel classic tune that they are deserving.

Best Metal Performance:
“Shock Me” — Baroness
“Slivera” — Gojira
“Rotting in Vain” — Korn
“Dystopia” — Megadeth
“The Price Is Wrong” — Periphery

PiercingMetal’s Pick: Nice. These are some great nominations for the Metal stuff and while I am personally leaning towards Megadeth I would not mind seeing Gojira or Baroness win the Grammy. These last two are newer to some listeners but they have been offering up the Heavy Metal good for a bunch of years and are to be commended for it. Good luck to all participants in this category.

Raising A Glass To Four Decades Of David Bowie’s “ChangesOneBowie”

A few months ago I did a “Music Milestone” piece for The Eagles “Their Greatest Hits: 1971-1975” album and while it was not the typical type of milestone item that I would normally reflect on, the album was of a very special nature to me and their founding guitarist Glen Frey had just passed away the previous month. It seemed “right” based on the timing to me and that brings me to this latest Music Milestone which raises a glass to the fact that David Bowie’s “ChangesOneBowie” Greatest Hits LP is officially forty years old today. The world lost the great David Bowie very early in 2016 and with his loss still resonating profoundly in a lot of us, I wanted to add this album anniversary to our narratives.

This album would be Bowie’s first ever hits collection and it spanned about nine of his albums offering up tracks from his earliest recordings in 1969 up until 1976. I’ve left the names of the actual albums noted on the individual tracks for better reference if you were curious. I’ve owned this album for many, many years now but don’t think that I purchased it during its actual release year since I was not yet at the album buying age. That was coming soon enough based on my vintage but I was not there yet. I knew all of the tunes of course since I would listen to my parent’s stereo and focus on the Classic Rock stations of the day. WNEW FM and WPLJ FM were among my favorites back in the day. You would hear no less than three or four Bowie tracks across the regular rotation and of course these songs are resident on this first compilation. Let’s take a look at the individual tracks on the release and then we can talk about them a little more afterward.

Paying Respects At David Bowie’s NYC Residence

Photo - David Bowie

The news about the passing of the great David Bowie was still stinging my musical mind pretty hard after first hearing about it this past Monday and while I had already reflected on this sad news in THIS POST, I felt compelled to pass by his NYC residence to pay respects and to photograph some of the visuals that had been left by other fans. David and Iman lived downtown not far from China Town in this building you see here.

It was relatively early in the day and not yet lunch hour so the crowd while gathering was not impossible to navigate with. The way it was set up in front of Bowie’s apartment was protected by a police gate and fans were allowed to walk through to look at things and leave mementos to honor the memory of this iconic musical force. The photos below are what I saw laid out in honor for David by his ardent fans and as you can see there are incredible photos, albums and compact discs along with beautiful notes and quotes. I’ve also added in some thoughts from music people that I know from my own journalistic adventuring to make this nod of respect more special.
