As the temperature drops in NYC (a line that is actually being written with a wry grin since NYC feels more like the beginnings of Spring at the moment) the tour announcements are coming in fast and furious and are keeping an already busy schedule of Metal reporting. That being said it was only a few hours ago that we learned of this upcoming trek by those titans of the Death Metal Cannibal Corpse who will be looking to melt whatever winter ends up being like for us with help from Obituary, Cryptopsy and Abysmal Dawn. I’ve snagged the poster and press copy for you below and will add some thoughts at the close so do read on.
The Press Release:
CANNIBAL CORPSE will kick off 2016 with one of the most bludgeoning death metal tour lineups of the year! The over month-long trek, presented by The Noise, will tear across North America beginning on February 12th and run through March 20th. The band will be joined by fellow Floridian death metal progenitors, Obituary, as direct support, followed by Canada’s Cryptopsy, and Los Angeles’ Abysmal Dawn. Tickets go on sale this Friday, December 11th, at 10:00am local time through all local and national ticket outlets. Continue reading Cannibal Corpse Will Bring Death (Metal) To Winter 2016→
Artist: Abigail Williams Venue: Blender Theater (New York, NY) Opener: Goatwhore, Daath, SWAATS, Abysmal Dawn Date: 7/23/2009 Label: Candlelight Records
They called this tour the “Conquer And Curse” tour and it pretty much came on the heels of two days of Summer Slaughtering in NYC by being held at the Gramercy Theatre only a few days after that massive lineup of Death Metal had paid a visit. For “Conquer And Curse” we found a headlining Abigail Williams with direct support coming from Goatwhore and while we really enjoy what AW does we had to admit that we were one of the many who were scratching our heads about the band headlining something like this. It would also feature the Metal might of S.W.W.A.A.T.S., Abysmal Dawn and Daath, all three amounting to bands that had never been seen by these Metal eyes so that made me sure to get inside the venue in time to catch the show from the start. Leading off the roster of crushing brutality would be S.W.W.A.A.T.S. Continue reading Abigail Williams @ Blender Theater at Gramercy (7/23/2009)→
Artist: Abysmal Dawn Title: “Programmed To Consume” Label: Relapse Records Release Date: 5/13/2008 Genre: Technical Death Metal Rating: 4/5
Abysmal Dawn is part of the next generation of Technical Death Metal and with their Relapse Records debut “Programmed To Consume” clearly demonstrates that they mean business. The album starts off the assault with the title track and from the very onset we find that the brutality and technical display is top notch. The band blisters through the riffs that are carefully layered over some inhuman blast beat drumming but it’s not just a Thrash Fest as we find on tracks like “Twilight’s Fallen” where they introduce a slowly trudging riff over the solid double kick. The band is led by Charles Elliot who handles the growling, guitar and even a little keyboard and he does well on all ends. Jamie Boulanger also plays guitar and given it is not specified if only one of the axe wielders does the leads I will just assume that he does as well. Terry Barajas is on the drums and probably one of the more proficient players I had heard in a few months given the amount of Metal I am absorbing. His level of play shows that he is a talented and creative technician on the kit for he not only has the ability to throttle the listener but to also impress those who are seeking deeper levels of percussion during the songs. At times I felt he was dueling with Elliott’s guitar riffing and that impression made the Abysmal Dawn material a little more profound. Continue reading “Programmed To Consume” by Abysmal Dawn→
