When I explored the “Star Trek: Mission New York” Convention last year, there were signs all over the Javits Center that broadcast the coming of the next “Star Trek” series, and exclusive program to the CBS All Access offering called “Star Trek: Discovery”. Yesterday, the network released their “first look” trailer and I am sharing it with you below. Take a look.
The Premise: Set roughly ten years before the events of the original Star Trek, the series follows the crew of the USS Discovery as they discover new worlds and civilizations, while exploring the franchise’s signature contemporary themes. The season-long storyline revolves around “an incident and an event in Star Trek history that’s been talked about but never been explored”.
Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham
Terry Serpico as Anderson
Maulik Pancholy as Nambue: Chief Medical Officer of the USS Shenzhou
Sam Vartholomeos as Connor: A junior officer in Starfleet Academy
James Frain as Sarek
Doug Jones as Saru
Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou: Captain of the Shenzhou
Anthony Rapp as Stamets: A Science Officer
Chris Obi as T’Kuvma: A Klingon
Shazad Latif as Tyler: A Starfleet lieutenant
Mary Chieffo as L’Rell: Battle Deck Commander
Jason Isaacs as Lorca
Mary Wiseman as Tilly
Rainn Wilson as Harry Mudd
Kenneth Mitchell as Kol: Commanding Officer of the Klingons
Rekha Sharma as Landry: Security Officer

Clare McConnell as Dennas
PiercingMetal Thoughts: I felt that this first look was surely interesting enough to find me setting the DVR for the season premiere episode but I am pretty much on the fence about signing up for another means of streaming something. CBS only has a few select shows that I watch these days so a subscription is not something I’d like to add onto my already too expensive monthly cable bill. I’m very open to a new series and would probably find myself all in if it was on a regular channel but this is something new and on the exclusive side. There do look to be some interesting characters along with ones we would come to know in the classic original series and I guess that this will be a par for the course sort of thing in the running of the show. The effects also seem to be on point which is too be expected at this stage of the game. Let me know what you fellow Trekkies thought about this trailer and if you think you will be subscribing to the CBS All Access to follow the series across its run down in the comments section below. Also, if you are one of our newer readers or just missed the “Star Trek: Mission New York” convention that I referenced in my intro, I’d love for you to peruse it so just click on THIS LINK. See you next time.
