PiercingMetal Goes To “Heavy Metal Monday” @ Terroir Wine Bar (2/26/2013)

Most of my readers know how I regularly call into the Heavy Metal Mayhem Radio Show which is a Blog Talk Radio feature and hosted by Mike “The Big Cheeze” Catricola; If you don’t, well, I guess now you do. That being said, the other day Mike invited me to tag along to a private function being held at the Terroir Wine Bar in the Murray Hill section of NYC. According to Mike, it was a “Heavy Metal Night”, and they were also celebrating an anniversary of some kind at the establishment.

“Welcome to Heavy Metal Monday”; Tonight’s private party setting was from 9pm until I guess 1am, but The Heavy Metal Monday scenario begins at 5pm and presents what amounts to an album of music for each hour with a closing up of consumer requests. I have a photo of the “musical menu” at the end of this narrative but during our visit, The Big Cheeze and I head Slayer, Mastodon and Metallica. Solid choices for sure.

Here’s our awesome serving staff…Kimberly, Nick and I apologize for not knowing the last girl in the image. If I find out I shall correct. Very cool people all around.

Here’s Paul Brady, the official curator of the happening and a diehard Metal fan and Jazz afficionado as well. What you didn’t think Alex Skolnick was the only Metal head enjoying Jazz now did you?

The display of the various wines were awesome and while this was similar on the opposite side of where Mike and I were sitting, I only snared the one shot. Tonight I was enjoying a nice Riesling. Mike had the Merlot in case you were wondering. It was a nice change of pace from the Amstel Lights one can always find me drinking. All the while the Metal was blasting around us.

Here’s the proprietor, curator and brain-stormer for the function and us guys. Pictured from L2R are myself, Paul Brady, Kate “Chaos”, Paul Grieco (proprietor) and Le Grand Fromage, Mike Catricola. The “Heavy Metal Monday” angle was a suggestion of Miss Chaos, who according to Paul, cited loving Cinderella on her job interview. Nothing wrong with that, I enjoy them as well.

I had to enforce a “Metal Pose” rule since this was a Metal hang and our last photo showed no horns from the staff. I could not let that happen after all.

Get some “ink” during Heavy Metal Mondays….Yep, they had some temporary tattoos that you could put on. I snapped this of one of the patrons sitting next to me at the bar. Didn’t do this myself though.

Here’s a sweeping view of the establishment. As you can see there is a bar on the left, and numerous tables to the right hand side. I gauged about ten of so. There was ample room for a decent group of friends if you all popped in. There is a small kitchen and while there was a larger menu at the place when we walked in, they were only serving up chicken wings and popcorn at the function. They were tasty but I do admit that I would have enjoyed a couple of other finger foods being available to choose from.

Some patrons at the bar. Mike was surprised that I knew someone when we walked into the place considering he invited me and that I had no idea about the “Heavy Metal Monday” night events. I always love seeing a familiar face in a new environment so didn’t mind this at all.

Wings…….

Here is this evenings “Metal Menu” and as you can see the event started up at 5pm like I mentioned earlier. So Mike and I missed a few of the tunes being played. Perhaps next time. Each album had some commentary next to it which offered up a little insight to the happening. There was also a larger book that I did not snap a photo of but really thought was well put together.

The bar also had a few “activity pages” laying around and some crayons for the patrons to have a little fun by coloring in some famous Metal photographs or finding band names in the puzzle. These were taken from the wonderful “Heavy Metal Fun Time Activity Book”. I’ve embedded a link below to an Amazon.com purchase point if you should want to get a copy for yourself. It looks like an awesome thing.

Closing Thoughts: So can this idea work out at all? Well, I certainly think it can be something extraordinary if they expand outside the broadcast of only bands like Slayer or Mastodon and some of the other offerings that were being played this evening. Mind you every card carrying Metalhead loves the legends but for someone like me, I enjoy the broader canvas of Metal and think different things should be peppered in. Perhaps instead of full album presentations, an album side only to allow for greater appreciation of more bands during the time of the “Heavy Metal Mondays”. To my knowledge there are not a whole lot of places that welcome the Metal Community and focus on them outside of Duff’s, Idle Hands and Lucky 13 so its great to find another space looking to welcome us in and help keep our music in play.

New York City has a fantastic amount of top drawer Metal bands coming through town, so maybe the occasional meet and greet can be done here since its a stones throw away from The Gramercy Theatre or at least a great place for bands to hang out and mingle with fans and enjoy their music after shows or while in town on press visits. We also have some terrific up and coming acts that I think would be great selling points if they took part in the “Heavy Metal Monday” presentation. If stuff like this happens and I end up participating you can surely count on some blogging since that is what this part of PiercingMetal is all about. Thanks again to Mike for letting me join in for the fun and to the staff of Terroir for inviting us in the first place and letting us enjoy the night with great ease.

Please do check it out or comment below so we get a consensus to your thoughts. Bands especially are welcome to throw their two cents into the mix or their representatives.

    1. You’re too funny, but hey if I run for Elected Metal Office, I promise you as a citizen of The Metal Republic a righteous rule with lots of blasting Metal each and every day.
