Yesterday, Marvel Comics announced that 2019 was the year of their 80th Anniversary and that we could look forward to all sorts of things for our collection across the year. That notice can be found HERE for those who missed it. Hasbro Toys also shared that they would be getting in on the fun with the first two reveals from their Marvel Legends Series line of action figures. As you can see, the images are of the enigmatic telepath Professor X and the Merc With A Mouth, Deadpool. They look terrific.
PiercingMetal Thoughts: Considering all of the comic book stuff and superhero movies coming out in 2019, you’re going to want to pay close attention to our Pop Culture Category more than ever before. The annual Toy Fair is about a month away now and we hope to attend once again making it our ninth year.
Our 2019 New Year does seem to be off to a proper start as the tours continue to be announced with some of them being brand new bands and then some others who are quite familiar. Case in point this return by the legendary British Progressive Rock band Procol Harum.
The Press Release:
In February 2019, the legendary Procol Harum will return to North America in support of their latest album Novum (Eagle Rock Entertainment). The band will perform at various City Winery locations in major markets, allowing attendees an up-close-and-personal experience.
“We haven’t visited the USA since July 2014, and this has enabled us to have the new material from our studio album PLUS favorites & rarities from the past 50 years,” states founder / songwriter / lead singer / pianist Gary Brooker. “It’s a long time, but Procol is always current (or timeless). See you in the wine bar- mine’s a large one!“
Released in 2017, Novum – the band’s 13th album – was unveiled in conjunction with Procol Harum’s 50th Anniversary. As stated by Goldmine Magazine, the album “perfectly captures their classic sound… it demonstrates that the Procol Harum sound is still well etched in the musical firmament.” Rich in the band’s distinctive instrumentation and Gary Brooker’s emotive vocals, it exudes the classic sound that led the band to sell over 10 million copies of their hit single “A Whiter Shade Of Pale,” which now sits in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame’s newly formed “Singles” category.

PiercingMetal Thoughts: While I’m happy to find the group returning to our shores, I must admit that I was never one of the people who rallied behind their illustrious career. Their classic single “Whiter Shade Of Pale” remains one of historical favorite tunes but I was never a study nor did I get to see them live in concert. Perhaps I will fix that oversight with one of their NYC appearances. So what about you dear readers? Were you people that followed this influential Progressive group? Chime in down below with your thoughts about their overdue return.
It was just over a month ago that we shared the second trailer for the upcoming “Captain Marvel” film from Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and if you missed our post and thoughts about it based on the holidays, just click HERE to see it. I had to admit that it was awesome and that is where I color myself surprised at the reveal of a “First Look” clip which surfaced only a few hours ago. Let’s take a look at this brief clip and then follow it with the premise, casting and another one of the exciting posters for the film.
The Premise: Set in the mid-1990s, Captain Marvel follows Carol Danvers, a former U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, as she turns into one of the galaxy’s mightiest heroes and joins Starforce, an elite Kree military team, before returning home with new questions about her past and identity when the Earth is caught in the center of an intergalactic conflict between two alien worlds. At the onset of December we shared the news about High On Fire and their “Electric Messiah Tour” (seen HERE) and it was going to be a great way to start the 2019 Year in Music. Sadly, there have been some medical concerns with singer Matt Pike and this tour is cancelled in full. Please take a look at the Official Statement and Affected Dates. Refunds should be available at point of purchase.
Frontman Matt Pike has provided a statement:
“Dear Friends and fans,
To my brothers, my crew, and anyone else this affects. I do apologize for the inconvenience of this cancelation. I feel as though I’m explaining lightning striking twice. I wanted nothing more in the world to play these songs live, nor ever cancel something I say I’m gonna do.”
“I am a warrior for our art, and have endured some painful things to what we do. The timing and repeating nature of this is my nightmare and almost impossible. Nevertheless, to save yet another toe, my big one, I have been grounded by circumstances out of my control. I will have more of a medical report to come but right now I’m at great risk of losing it, and/or a bigger portion of my foot due to Diabetes. Which I have been managing very well.”
“It just shows how this disease can affect our lives. Please forgive me, and if you know anything about me, you know this is not like me. We will be back!”

PiercingMetal Thoughts: We wish Matt Pike the absolute best of health that is possible from this emergency and hope to be able to support their ongoing musical efforts once this is addressed and a proper bill of health is granted him. This makes me add a little soapboxing to my readers and say please make sure you are also in good health and are not at risk of well, anything. If you’ve not been to the doctor in some time, go for a checkup. Take some vitamins, excercise, eat in moderation and get a good nights rest as often as possible. I wanna see people at shows again and again. Good luck Matt. Thanks for all your hard work in music.
