Opening Today: “Dredd” (7/12/2012)

He is the Law……and a new film featuring the legendary Judge Dredd opens today.

The question is will it matter at all based on just how ill-received the film that starred Sly Stallone in the role back in 1995 did. I’ll admit that while I enjoyed some moments of that film it really wasn’t very good at all. The trailer for the new “Dredd” film does look very dramatic and exciting and in the role of the mighty Judge Dredd is Karl Urban and he appears rather intense from the brief clip. I’ve copied the about information from the film’s official Wikipedia entry to save some typing:

“Dredd is a 2012 British-South African science fiction action film directed by Pete Travis and written and produced by Alex Garland. It is based on the 2000 AD comic strip Judge Dredd and its eponymous character created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra. Karl Urban stars as Judge Dredd, a law enforcer given the power of judge, jury and executioner in a vast, dystopian metropolis called Mega-City One that lies in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Dredd and his inexperienced partner, Judge Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), are forced to bring order to a 200-storey high-rise block of flats and deal with its resident drug lord, Ma-Ma (Lena Headey).”

The Cast:
Karl Urban as Judge Dredd:
Olivia Thirlby as Judge Cassandra Anderson
Wood Harris as Kay
Lena Headey as Ma-Ma (Madeline Madrigal)
Domhnall Gleeson as the gang’s unnamed computer expert

So will you see it? I think that I would like to but that free time is all based on how many shows that I need to attend and process for the website. Sitting and enjoying a film is one of those luxury things in my every few weeks. I’ll leave the comments open for you to let me know what you think or have anticipation about but please do not post spoilers since I don’t want it ruined for other readers or myself for that matter.

As the character of Judge Dredd is such a compelling one, I’ve embedded links to some of the books related to the mythos and that aforementioned film with Sylvester Stallone. See it if you must but try to do so on Netflix or something because I don’t find it as something worth owning by anyone other than a super diehard Stallone fan.
