Open Now: “Superheroes In Gotham” @ NY Historical Society Museum & Library

When I went to the local comic book store to pick up a few of the titles that interest me most I noticed some takeaway cards and one that struck me as particularly interesting was the one labeled “Superheroes In Gotham”; The focus of a new exhibit that was currently open at the NY Historical Society Museum and Library right here in our own Big Metal Media Apple. It was the first I was hearing about this and to be honest I am still a little shell shocked from NY Comic Con but please check out the poster and the exhibit premise below and then I will toss in a few added thoughts.

The Official Scoop:

“Comic book superheroes are a part of our daily lives. They engage our imaginations on the pages of comic books, television and movie screens, as well as the Broadway stage and in the virtual world of gaming. Contemporary literature and art reference them; adults and children alike delight in donning superhero t-shirts, caps, and sneakers.

Since their introduction in the late 1930s, superheroes have been powerful role models, inspirational and enviable. Based on mythological archetypes, they reflect, respond to, and offer ways to navigate the twists and turns of modern life. Comic books are a great American art form, a cultural phenomenon born in New York City that now extends around the globe.

Superheroes in Gotham will tell the story of the birth of comic book superheroes in New York City; the leap of comic book superheroes from the page into radio, television, and film; the role of fandom, including the yearly mega event known as New York Comic Con; and the ways in which comic book superheroes, created in the late 1930s through the 1960s, have inspired and influenced the work of contemporary comic book artists, cartoonists, and painters in New York City.”

NOTICE: This exhibit will run from 10/9/2015-2/21/2016

PiercingMetal Thoughts: Hopefully you don’t mind my being a little over ten days late about this one but since it runs into February of 2016 I’m not feeling too bad about being tardy for a change. That being said this is one exhibit that I would love to check out and its primarily from being a Marvel Comics reader who always enjoyed how many of their super-heroes were centered right here in NYC. I mean we had The Daily Bugle, The Baxter Building before Four Freedoms Plaza and of course Avengers Mansion. Apparently even the S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Triskelion was in Lower Manhattan before it was destroyed. The DC heroes had a wider city reach with Metropolis, Gotham City, Central City and so on but its still relative when it comes down to it. Hopefully my schedule clears up a little bit for me to properly explore these offerings. I generally like to see what else is around in a museum when I am in them as opposed to only taking in one special exhibit. So what do you readers think about this one? Does it also pique your interests? Lets hear what you have to say in the comments section.
