Back in 2013, Progressive Hard Rock legends Asia performed in Bulgaria with the Plovdiv Opera Orchestra for their excited fans on that side of the world. The performance was captured on recording and video and will be released at the end of February on an album called “Symfonia: Live In Bulgaria 2013”. Yesterday, the Frontiers Records people in the press released the first single from the concert with the bands seminal hit “Only Time Will Tell”. Here are a few thoughts about it.
Having grown up on these tunes I love getting the chance to hear it delivered in a new and exciting fashion. It’s not always easy to translate a Hard Rock tune into a number with an orchestra behind it but fortunately the melodies of Asia and more than in sync with this sort of thing. Guitarist Sam Coulson is a perfect complement to the lineup now that the great Steve Howe is full duty with Yes once again. While this is only the single I can safely say that Wetton still has the golden pipes while Palmer is a solid monster drummer as well. Geoff Downes keys cut through the concert like a knife. I am very interested in seeing this on the Blu-ray when it arrives at the close of February and I really hope that Asia is planning on visiting NYC once more. I’ve only seen them twice in concert despite being a fan since the debut album was released. You can download this legally on Amazon.com for a mere pittance.
