Title: “Obligated By Obscurity”
Genre: Heavy Metal
When you listen to the guys in Malstrom you can tell there is a good amount of talent in the band and certainly a drive to keep it nice and heavy. However this does not come without some criticism. Yes this is a demo, but it sounds too much like one in many places. I come to this conclusion based on comparisons to many other demo products that I have received lately. The production should have been focused on a little more to strive for a cleaner and more solid sound. At times this piece is muddy and feels a little out of joint as a result. Good drum parts are lost under the fact that you cannot discern the various drums being struck. The guitar work is largely interesting and you can tell that the band was influenced by the past masters Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. Never a bad thing showing a little of those influences in the music. It can separate you from many of your peers.
Jeff’s vocal style leans towards the growlers of today, but sometimes he seems as if he is straining himself a little too much. I offer him to mix it up a bit so he does not kill his voice this early in his career. Bands are moving towards the fine mix of clean and dirty voice and I feel this will be more the standard in future bands. Mike has a nice style and technique on the guitar and Bill while very solid I found it hard to grasp some of the beats he was doing since it was so back in the mix. Alex totally holds it all together on the bass very nicely. I think of the five tracks I liked the work on track one and five the most. This showcased the level of play they are capable of.
I wish them well in the quest for grander things, but do advise they review the production against others doing the same thing if they mean to shop this material. It is my guess that this group kicks some ass live and I hope to see them sometime soon, as they are New Yorkers.
