Artist: Toni Cornell/Chris Cornell
Title: “Nothing Compares 2U” (Single)
Release Date: 6/18/2018
It’s been just over a year since the world lost the voice of the great Chris Cornell and while so many of us still mourn the singer, there is no one his passing has affected more than his daughter Toni. Now, in honor of Father’s Day, she has released a cover single of the hit made famous by Sinead O’Connor with “Nothing Compares 2U”. The amazing thing about this is that it is done as a duet with her Father Chris and was recorded shortly before his death. Over the years I can admit to never really following the career of O’Connor, but I always enjoyed this track since it was such a powerful and heartfelt number. Could a duet by the Cornell’s work in the same fashion? The answer to that question is a rousing “YES”, it can, and it does.
As I began my listen, I found that the beginning verse of “it’s been seven hours and fifteen days since you took your love away” hit me rather hard and this was likely based on the knowledge of how Chris left us. As you might already know, “NC2U” is a sad song overall and with that said, some of the lines are rougher considering the circumstances. Through the whole track, its Toni’s voice that is the loudest in the mix while Chris is singing along with her under the verses. I found this to be an interesting way to do it but perhaps the initial plan for the song was to showcase Toni on some demos but then, you know… I’ll add that Toni’s voice is terrific, so it seems as though some of her Fathers talent will live on through her in the future should she choose to pursue the music business in some fashion. Overall this was a touching memorial to the late great singer and I think by the end of it you might need a tissue or two.
Chris Cornell might be gone but at least we have his music to carry us through for years to come. Wishing all of our readers who are Fathers, a Happy Father’s Day. Do something relaxing, you deserve it.
