Learning that the legendary Ritchie Blackmore was recording new music with his group Rainbow is always a great way to start the day and just recently it was announced that this would indeed be the case. The guitarist was going to rework the song “Land Of Hope and Glory” which a lot of you graduates might recognize as your entrance music to the ceremony but that is its real name. The single was released a few days ago and I just wanted to offer up some thoughts on it for good measure.

The beginning of this one is on the subtle side and features mostly acoustic guitar with a violin accompaniment and results are powerful. There is such a heart to this presentation and in some sense it brought me back to a time decades ago when I walked towards a graduation with friends and the promise of a hopefully bright future. After a minute of this some drums kick in to keep the time while Blackmore switches to electric lead guitar as he plays the melody that was initially heard on violin. An angelic chorale backs him up as some flourish and flair come out of the six-string as only he can deliver it. Having seen Blackmore in concert a few times with his Blackmore’s Night project, I did feel that this particular song might have worked better as a new offering from them but with a revamped Rainbow being on his plate at the moment it makes sense to do it this way. A highly recommended single to legally download which you can do care of the major mediums of such purchase like the Amazon.com one below.
