Released a couple of months prior to the live concert DVD that bears the same name is its audio companion from Germany’s EdGuy. The double CD, fourteen track effort finds the band pulling out all the stops in front of a rabid San Paulo Brazil crowd and since you know how these folks respond to the Metal at the end of the day, the home listeners gets to relive the mayhem that was ensuing. The weird thing for me about this release was why it was made as a separate item as opposed to being packaged with the outstanding film that it comes from. In this day and age, I have seen a much better response for those items that place both audio and video together. Oh well, I guess this is why I don’t work for a record company development team and instead am one of the many voices that “speak” about what they dish out.

Musically this is a tight show and one that delivers the energy through your speakers very well, but since it is EdGuy, the home listener loses a lot of the overall fun that is to be witnessed on the video release. Let’s face it; EdGuy is hardly a serious band these days and more like a wandering musical carnival that enforces a strict “leave your dramas at the door” policy. They have come a long way from being a band that had shades of Helloween to their style and now are more of a slapstick cartoon as opposed to an educational film. Don’t get me wrong as I mean this in the highest respect and ALWAYS have a blast when EdGuy comes a calling to my town. As a matter of fact I don’t think I missed one regional appearance yet. In my opinion there are far too many bands that take themselves too intensely serious and sometimes the overall grimace that they bear ruins the night. With an EdGuy show you almost feel as if you should bring silly string or bubble blaster water guns along because you are in for that kind of out of the box fun at one of their gigs. The band is fronted by Tobias Sammet who doesn’t miss a trick vocally or with his acerbic wit. Sometimes he directs this at the audience but it is usually pointing at one of his lineup and no matter what the choice may be it is always funny.

Some of the tunes have already appeared on the bands classic “Vain Glory Opera” but that was okay by me since they are concert staples and almost like their own “Living After Midnight”. Given this show was done in support of their “Rocket Ride” release of 2006, we find the band addressing that album in a little more detail which makes perfect sense. Highlights for me come via “Avantasia” and “Tears Of A Mandrake” which are of course older and the rousing closer of “King Of Fools”. The band does showcase the highest levels of energy and the crowd seems to be feeding them more of it as the show goes on. If you are a diehard EdGuy fan and wish to help out the Tobias Sammet retirement fund a little more than I say purchase the audio version of the show and then go get yourself a copy of the live DVD since that ties all of this together a little more. For fans of solidly performed live shows on CD this is a great choice but if you are one of those fans that pine for the bands early days then I say give it a pass. The party shall continue without you at a minimal loss.
