We tend to geek out over here for the Comic Book stuff on the PiercingMetal Musings Blog and have been proving our proud Nerd factor time and time again with the review of the various titles and whenever possible some discussion of the very exciting Marvel Cinematic Universe films. I never mentioned this but it doesn’t matter at this point, but I didn’t see “Iron Man” when it first came out. It was a very busy time in life so I needed to wait for DVD but I did catch “The Incredible Hulk” in the cinema and loved how the building of a shared universal timeline was happening with these characters. Wasn’t it fantastic that those films led to not only a second Iron Man film, but also a Thor and Captain America one and brought us to the blockbuster hit of 2012 – “The Avengers”.
That exciting film brings us to the next go round for Iron Man who will battle for his life against The Mandarin (who will be played by Ben Kingsley). Since the trailer has just been put online I am sharing with you readers so we can get a little dialogue going about the premise and what we hope it all will amount to. Of course it will be followed by the second Thor and Captain American films before we get a sequel to The Avengers. Take a look.
Hey my fiends, did you enjoy last years “American Horror Story” at all? Well if you did, the series has returned and the season premieres this evening on the FX Channel. For the East Coast its on at 10PM but the rest of you might want to check your local listings, provided you have the channel that is. I’ve added the creepy poster here for you along with premise and casting. Check it out.
The Plot: The second season follows the patients, doctors and nuns who occupy Briarcliff Mental Institution in Massachusetts in 1964, intercut with scenes from the present. Sister Jude and Sister Mary Eunice maintain the institution that was founded by Monsignor Timothy Howard to treat and house the mentally and criminally insane. Psychiatrist Dr. Oliver Thredson and scientist Dr. Arthur Arden treat the patients within the facility. The patients, many of whom claim to be unjustly institutionalized, include lesbian journalist Lana Winters, accused serial killer Kit Walker, and alleged murderer Grace Bertrand. I’m getting to this a little past the show’s premier, but that was based on my being busy with all the posts involving the NY Comic Con 2012 so please pardon me for the lapse. In any event, DC Comics has given us a live action television series called “Arrow” which will bring to life the adventures of a hero we know and love called Green Arrow. The official byline is below:
The television series iteration of the DC Comics character stars Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen, an eccentric billionaire who was recently discovered alive on a deserted island after having been presumed dead for five years. Queen returns to Starling City and begins moonlighting as a crime fighter. Arrow premieres on Wednesday, October 10th.
Fans of the AMC Original Program and Kevin Smith will be happy to learn that season two of the unscripted reality program “Comic Book Men” airs its premiere this evening. Does this excite you? Were you a fan of it when it made its debut back in February?
The premise of the show is the day-to-day happenings that take place in Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash which is Kevin Smith’s comic book shop that is located in Red Bank, New Jersey. Having seen a few of the first seasons six episodes I can tell you that there is some similarity to “Pawn Stars” where the customer brings in items that they wish to sell off to the store along with the occasional expert who knows more about a particular piece. In season one they called upon someone to help with a Star Wars item and another for a Godzilla piece. There is also a podcast that Smith hosts and the show appears to switch back and forth from the staff talking there and the activity at the comic store. Did you watch the first season? What are your thoughts on the show? I will give you mind after presenting the cast of players who have remained the same. The show is now only 30 minutes as opposed to the 60 that the first season was.
Kevin Smith – Store Owner and Podcast Host
Walt Flanagan – Store Manager
Mike Zapcic – One of the clerks at the shop
Bryan Johnson – Friend of the staff.
Ming Chen – One of the clerks at the shop
My Thoughts On It: After breezing through the first season in a few hours one lazy afternoon I have to say that the show was pretty much what I expected it to be. I anticipated being only moderately interested what it offered and after seeing it this was a correct thought. When the customers brought in their wares I was the most attentive but the constant belittling of each other in the staff was getting a little stale to me. When they hit the garage sale and found some really worthwhile treasures like Mego figures and vintage comics, well that was pretty cool. I used to have so many of the Mego collections and they all broke over the years. Sigh. One thing that did strike me as curious is that we only see Smith during the podcast and never at the store. We get a visit from “Jay” early in the season and he appears to be as out there in real life as he does in the movies. Do you think you will tune in to the second season?
Time to rally up your armaments for the seemingly endless battle against the dead who walk and seek us out like we were McDonald’s cheeseburgers. Yep, hot off the ending of this years NY Comic Con, comes the third season of “The Walking Dead” which begins tonight. Folks that didn’t attend the Con might be amused to find out that the access passes to the event featured various characters from the show.
