Piercing Ken’s Coverage Of PDN Photoplus Expo (2010)

Before you get confused by my title of this post let me explain a little bit. Back in May, I decided to launch a second website which would be less focused on my Metal Music Adventuring and more aimed at sharing other photography and events that I attended and wanted to share with you. I am not one that lets his creative edge be directed by Facebook, so I came up with a name that I felt was clever in “” and I welcomed readers to it on my Social Networks with THIS POSTING (click that text by the way).

That being said I decided to use PiercingMetal’s Blog capacity to periodically showcase what I have going on over there on PiercingKen in a post on this side of my creative fence. One of the conventions that I just started to go to is the PDN Photo Expo and since I didn’t request “press” or other “media credentials” for it and essentially was a fan of photography and gear wandering the expo floor, it made more sense to feature any images and opinion on the other website. This signpost of a posting should be thought of as a traffic sign directing you down another path to see the story if you so wish. Thanks for your interest in and hopefully in this new site – I love entertaining you.

RIP: N.Y. Yankees Ultimate Fan – Freddy “Sez” Schuman (10/17/2010)

It’s with great sadness that I report to the readers of this blog about the passing of the biggest fan of the New York Yankees baseball franchise – Mr. Freddy “Sez” Schuman who passed away on 10/17/10 after suffering a heart attack a few days ago.  He was 85 years old. You might be wondering why I’ve chosen to add such an individual and give them props in a primarily music related blog’s memorial category, but my reasoning for this is simple.  As a music journalist I know full well about how important the fans of the bands I write about are. I meet so many of them in my adventures and often applaud their interest and zeal in the music scene along with the various groups.  That being said, the New York Yankees were blessed to have a fan like Mr. Schuman who rallied the fans to the charge by banging on a heavy steel pan with a thick spoon.  Had you watched any of the teams games over the years you would have likely heard this clanging going off during a lot of their home ones.

NY Comic Con 2010 Begins Today!!!!

Have I ever mentioned to you readers that I am a major comic book geek? If I haven’t then let me put that on the table right now. I was a big time collector of the medium for many, many years and only recently cut back on the stuff based on space and financials being needed for other things in life.

Anyway, that being said I am super excited about my being a member of the attending press for the 2010 NY Comic Con and Anime Festival which will be held at the Jacob Javits Center over the next few days. You might be surprised at my saying that this is the first year that I have ever attempted such a feat as a professional and while I agree that I should have been doing this for years already; I just never got around to setting the whole thing up. My plan is to cover this event as extensively as possible and that means lots of photographs and lots of narrative views. The Javits Center is a huge space and I have heard many stories from media colleagues and friends who attended in the recent past about this being a crushing amount of humanity to contend with. I will be going on all of the days and starting with my semi-private voyage of the Press Time so wish me luck.

The KISS Invasion Reaches 7-Eleven – Gulp!

When KISS released their “Sonic Boom” album back in the summer of 2009 it set off a marketing blitz that I documented in a blog posting entitled “KISS Invades Wal-Mart”.  The reason we felt that writing this up was so interesting was based on just how much product with their branding had been delivered to the consumer in addition to the album which at the time of this writing has sold over 500,000 copies. We featured a number of images from the massive campaign that the kings of the nighttime world had presented to their fans at the Wal-Mart store and offered up our thoughts on them as a lifelong fan and a consumer so please check it out via that title above. With that being said, we were certainly never expecting this sight when entering one of the local 7-Eleven convenience shops in our neighborhood.

PiercingMetal Spotlights: Judas Priest

For as long as I can remember, I have maintained that in my status as a Heavy Metal and Hard Rock fan that my own “Big Three” favorites were KISS, Van Halen and Judas Priest. Over the years I have of course come to appreciate and enjoy a wider variety of acts for the genre because there are so many amazing groups out there, but this list and its ranking has rarely veered off course. If memory serves me correctly, I first heard the band in High School about a thousand years ago (give or take) and the album of note at the time was “Hell Bent For Leather”. Wait, I am wrong in this assumption – the album that I FIRST heard by the band would the live recording of “Unleashed In The East”, and was the album that captured the band in action while on tour to support “HBFL”. I had never heard anything like the vocals of Rob Halford and the twin guitar wizardry of Downing and Tipton and when you put all this together with the powerful drumming of Les Binks I could safely admit that I was a fan from that moment on. From this defining moment I would try my own hand at some of the drum parts, look into the bands back catalog and even become the town crier who hoped to convince other Metal fans to rally behind me in the bands cause. Good times to say the least.
