I guess it’s been a little over a month since I shared my thoughts about the first single from Sabaton’s upcoming “The Last Stand” album (see THIS LINK if you missed it) and now they have dished out a second with “Blood Of Bannockburn”. Before I played the track, I poked around Wikipedia and learned a bit about this point in Scottish history but will use what the band has provided first for your indulgence.

“1314, nine years after the execution of William Wallace, the Scottish laid siege upon Stirling Castle and an agreement was made that if it had not been relieved by mid-summer the Englishwould surrender the castle to the Scottish. The English could of course not ignore that challenge, and sent a formidable force north towards Stirling to break the siege and relieve the troops inside. In the end Robert the Bruce and the Scottish defeated the English under Edward II’s command with a force half the size and not nearly as well equipped of what the English had at their disposal.”

The track begins with the sound of traditional Scottish pipes and some marching snare drums and they really sets the tone for the song which builds up its pace into a rousing effort from the onset. “When the time has come to fight, Scotland will unite” as the opening line just brings us into the feel that an epic battle for ones homeland is at stake and knowing what I know now about this particular battle, this was truly the case. Joakim probably added a kilt and a replica of the William Wallace sword to his stage arsenal with this one and I am sure it will be one of the larger anthems on the upcoming “The Last Stand” album. When it finished I felt like having a wee bit of Scotch and some haggis. The full album is still some time away but you can purchase this track right now via the link below. “Hail Caledonia”.
