Hey there readers, so I’ve just come in from walking around in the snow that has blanketed NYC and upon booting up the Central Brain of the Metal Command HQ I learned that the teaser trailer for the Fox reboot of “Fantastic Four” has been released. I’ve embedded yon code below and then we can talk about it a little bit. Check it out.

The film is directed by Josh Trank and stars Miles Teller (Mister Fantastic), Kate Mara (Invisible Girl), Michael B. Jordan (Human Torch), Jamie Bell (The Thing) and Toby Kebbell (Victor Domashev/Doom). According to the official Wiki “Simon Kinberg and Jeremy Slater wrote the screenplay from a story conceived by Kinberg and Trank. In The Fantastic Four, the team must learn to harness their abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy”.

PiercingMetal Thoughts: Speaking frankly, I do not have much faith in this film based on the proposed changes to canon that don’t make sense along with the ones that found me saying “now why did you even need to do that to the characters?”. The story is not based on any single storyline to the Fantastic Four mythos and I feel that that was a mistake and then it was disclosed that Miss Mara was told not to bother reading anything about the character she would play since it was not necessary. Really? It was also first rumored that Doctor Doom was going to be a woman in the film and while I was never able to verify this as a possibility it made my head spin. Now he is an anti-social programmer/blogger and not a cruel and insidious foreign tyrant. Yeah that is going to work. You’ll also notice that Torch is African American and in order to not come across as politically incorrect and racist I will hold my tongue about that change. As you watch this brief teaser this sure does not even strike me as a super-hero film. Do I hope its good? Well, yes of course but I don’t really think that it will be. I honestly have more faith in the upcoming DC Comics film “Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice” than this one. I guess I am fussy because Fantastic Four was one of the first comic books that I ever read and I followed it for many years. I also enjoyed the various cartoons that featured their adventures. The film will be released on August 7, 2015 and by that time you will have enjoyed the Marvel Studios offerings of “Avengers: Age Of Ultron” and “Ant-Man” and the continued forward thinking build of a cohesive Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Fox film, like the X-Men films, takes place in a different reality altogether and one can only hope that Marvel gets the rights to this property back sooner than later. Perhaps the licensing deal needs a clause about should you jeopardize a property, that you surrender it back to its owners. What are your thoughts on the teaser and will you see this film? Please let me know in the comments area below. All topical submissions will be approved.

  1. Going in and knowing it’s going to be closer to the Ultimates version of the origin story, closer to modern sci-fi, I don’t have an issue with some of the changes. That said FF is one fo the crown jewels of Marvel and you just cannot botch it up. I don’t love the idea of a re-boot in general, but if you are going to do it, do it like The Incredible Hulk movie. The casting looks good and I feel it can still have the relationships, comedy and character the FF books have had if its well written. I think Batman Begins is also a good model too, you can take some liberties with the story if it’s done well. Movies are not made for comicbook geeks and fanboys, they are made for moviegoers. Otherwise comic sales would more closely match movie ticket sales. Race is irrelevant to me. I’m more concerned about the villains and the treatment the the natural world. I think you are going to see Annhilus and the Negative Zone as the antagonist and Dr. Doom is not going to be a huge factor too early in the story except in the origin element.

I think Mara is a great choice in casting, but that is curious that didn’t want her to read the books. I’ll be an opening week viewer, but
