Now that April was officially off and running, one had to agree that it was doing its best to keep in the pace that was kicked off by March Metal Madness. We began our own Metal adventures earlier this week with Finnish powerhouse Sonata Arctica who stopped by NYC with both Mutiny Within and Powerglove in tow and now it was time for the aptly labeled “Finnish Metal Tour”. This show would bring us Finntroll, Moonsorrow, Swallow The Sun and Operatika and while I know that you scratch your head at the mention of the New Jersey Power Metallers, there is a reason for their appearance on this area’s show. Apparently the band Survivor’s Zero had dropped off the tour before it ever hit the USA and as result an area band would fill in the gap that they left. For me this was a pleasant surprise because they also have some good stuff. Here is how the night went down should you have missed out for any reason.

“Ur Jordens Djup” by Finntroll

Artist: Finntroll
Title: “Ur Jordens Djup”
Label: Century Media Records
Release Date: 4/24/2007
Genre: Black Folk Metal
Rating: 4/5

I’m certain that once you have heard the kind of Metal that Finntroll is best known for that you will not soon forget them. This is a very good thing as it has been awhile since we last heard from the guys for back in 2006, after the tour to support “Nattfodd”, the band would part ways with singer Tapio Wilska with “personal differences” being their reason. It was hardly the way to cap off a successful US invasion but happen it did and now the pressing business would be finding a suitable replacement in order to continue their unique brand of Pagan Folk Metal mayhem. After some searching and much drinking they found a like minded maniac to continue the pillaging in their new singer Vreth. The drinking continued and recordings were done at the Sonic Pump studios and the result finds that Finntroll has indeed returned. The fruit of their labors over the past year and a half are to be discovered with “Ur Jordens Djup”. The title is translated to “From The Depths Of The Earth” and I could think of nothing more appropriate when it comes to Finntroll.

As the summer moved steadily towards a close and the cooler North winds prepared us for their yearly visit it would prove to be the perfect time for a Finnish Troll invasion once again. The band had been here once before as direct support for Germany’s Sodom, and to be brutally honest the Trolls would blow them off the stage with the combination of Humppa melodies blended skillfully into Dark Pagan Metal. The show that night was an alcohol-fueled display of Metal might that not only proved that this was a band of headlining capacity, but also one that would be the cause of hundreds of head banger hangovers the following day. To quote a friend of mine after this show, it felt like someone had opened my brain with a can opener and I was hard pressed to disagree. It’s safe to say that once you have heard or seen them live that you will not soon forget them.
