“That One Night: Live In Buenos Aires” by Megadeth

Artist: Megadeth

Label: Image Entertainment
Release Date: 9/4/2007
Genre: Heavy Metal
Rating: 4/5

After having the chance to enjoy the killer live concert DVD by Megadeth for a couple of months now one might wonder whether an audio only version of this is concert is actually necessary. If you are one of those people who does not yet own the DVD for “That One Night: Live In Buenos Aires”, then you are indeed a Metal fan who is cheating themselves out of a totally enjoyable and kick ass concert film. The release itself has been receiving some high acclaim and showed a Megadeth that was firmly back in control of their destiny and deserving of any of the accolades that they were getting. It was filmed after the first Gigantour had completed and showcases the lineup of Dave Mustaine, the Drover Brothers Glen and Shawn and bassist James McDonough in front of a capacity crowd in Argentina. Given the band’s appearance in a region where they really know and love their Metal it was not surprising to find that the band shows a tightness that is only able to come after months of grueling touring. Needless to say the audience is beside themselves with joy and exhilaration as the band performed its set. The show was in support of “The System Has Failed”, their newest release at the time and as result had a fair amount of material from the album along with a number of staple numbers from their catalog. All in all this was a very worthy addition to one’s DVD collection. With that being said, do we really need to own the audio only version of this and my answer is very clearly “yes”. In order to make sure that fans had something to firm their decision up for them, Image Entertainment has included three additional songs from the concert that were not on the DVD. Those songs are “Skin Of My Teeth”, “Angry Again” and “Die Dead Enough” and each of them sounds fine but my favorite falls to “Skin” as it’s such a great live tune.

“United Abominations” by Megadeth

Artist: Megadeth
Title: “United Abominations”
Label: Roadrunner Records
Release Date: 5/15/2007
Genre: Heavy Metal
Rating: 4.5/5

The long awaited Megadeth arrives with “United Abominations” and I think this is a release that will quickly be regarded as one of the finest in the groups catalog. From start to finish this is an intriguing listen that is loaded to the hilt with the brand of Thrash Metal fury and melody that the band has been known for since their inception in 1983. The other important note is that this will be the first recordings for the most recent lineup of the band. Brothers, Shawn and Glen Drover (drums and guitar) have been touring with the group for a couple of years now and James LoMenzo (bass) only half that time but only now are finally able to show just how good a recording with their talents can sound. They shine like blazing Metal stars on every track. Another reason for the albums overall appeal is the fact that it has this “Old School” Metal purity that is not often found on the newer band releases. Given the wide array of genre specifications these days it’s nice to see an album that shows you that the roots for them all still rocks the hardest. As expected, “United Abominations” also contains a lot of fuel to the fire and deep, politically charged dialogue courtesy of Dave Mustaine. I have always given him serious credit for his ability to write an intelligent album and speak his mind in the music as opposed to standing at a podium at an awards show and suddenly letting his beliefs fly.

After months of successful touring with his shred fest-ival “Gigantour” – Dave Mustaine and Megadeth present you with 90 plus minutes of pure unadulterated Heavy Metal glory. The show was filmed in October 2005 and comes to us from Buenos Aires, a region where the Metal is always well received and every performer is guaranteed an animated and enthusiastic audience. This is without question a part of the world that responds to the music well and without making any offense to other worldwide concert goers there was one fact of this DVD that remains with me clearly and that is the audience was actually singing the guitar solos. You hear it most prevalent during “Symphony Of Destruction” but it is also apparent around the whole show as well. I have yet to experience this at a US performance of anyone so I think we had best raise our game when our favorite groups come around. This reaction showed a pure love of the band and some 25,000 strong would find Megadeth on top of their game once again as they delivered one classic after another and also did justice to their new material from the latest release at the time – “The System Has Failed”. The lineup was tight as can be on all counts with Glen and Shawn Drover (guitar and drums) working alongside Mustaine as if this was the band they were in for longer than the year and a half it had actually been. Perhaps their being Brothers gives them an edge that many bands don’t have and a better working knowledge of each other that most can only hope practice will give them. Bass would be fluidly held down by James McDonough who has since moved on and been replaced by James Lomenzo (Black Label Society/White Lion).

“Arsenal Of Megadeth” by Megadeth

Artist: Megadeth
Title: “Arsenal Of Megadeth”
Label: Capitol Records/EMI Music
Release Date: 3/21/2006
Genre: Heavy Metal
Rating: 8/10

Megadeth celebrates their career with a worthy collection of videos and vignettes along with some unseen footage that will have every Rattlehead screaming for more. As a fan of their earlier material and the heyday of Metal video and MTV’s “Headbanger’s Ball” I enjoyed the chance to have all of their videos in one convenient package. However, to make sure that this would be accepted and received by a larger audience Mustaine made sure to include a large amount of clips and features that have not been seen in a number of years. There is a little of everything and among them are vintage MTV appearances as well as clips from the film “Decline Of Western Civilization” of which Megadeth was a guest star. Several cool touring segments are presented such as “Clash Of The Titans” (from 2000) as well as footage from the celebrated 2005 “Gigantour”. There are interviews and day in the life segments and the end result is a whopping double DVD set that is bound to please Metal fans of all ages. As many Metallers can agree Megadeth is one of the more important bands to have ever come around for the genre, and this DVD collection serves as a good way to remember why this is the case. Intelligent lyrically, and musically profound Megadeth has given Headbangers a solid thrashing from 1983 until now.
