Def Leppard To Release “The Def Leppard EP” For Record Store Day 2017

As you’ve noticed there’s been a lot on the Metal docket today and there’s much more to come so let’s not dance around and instead get right to the news about Def Leppard’s release of “The Def Leppard EP” for this years Record Store Day. The full press release is below and then I’ll close out with some thoughts.

The Press Release:
Def Leppard Announces “The Def Leppard EP” For Record Store Day 22nd April 2017

“This is the EP that shone a light on this fledgling bunch of wannabes and set us on our way to international stardom (eventually…)! Recorded at Fairview Studios, just outside Hull in North Yorkshire, a studio we were extremely happy to frequent as it had been used on numerous occasions by the late great Mick Ronson. It took 2 days to record and cost £148.50 – money borrowed from my Dad (a feat financially and time wise we would never get close to achieving again, EVER!!!!)” – Joe Elliott,

Def Leppard and UMC/Mercury are pleased to announce the release of “The Def Leppard EP” in conjunction with Record Store Day 2017. This release marks the start of a series of catalogue releases over the next few years for Def Leppard.

22nd April 2017 will see the band release their original first EPwith replica art and picture cover. This is a 12″ version of the EP playing at 45rpm – a one off special for Record Store day and the first time it will be available in that format. The release is fully supported by the band. Track listing is as follows:

1. Ride Into The Sun (2:57)
2. Getcha Rocks Off (3:44)
3. The Overture (7:56)

The EP was originally recorded in November 1978 at Fairview studios in Hull and self-produced by the band. Released in January 1979 through the bands own Bludgeon Riffola label, this was the EP that launched one of the most successful and critically acclaimed rock bands of all time.

Def Leppard continues to release new music, most recently with their self titled studio album that was released to widespread critical acclaim in late 2015. The band also recently hit #1 with their live concert DVD, “And There Will BE A Next Time…Live From Detroit,” released in February 2017. With more than 100 million albums sold worldwide and two prestigious Diamond Awards in the USA, Def Leppard – Joe Elliott (vocals), Phil Collen (guitar), Rick “Sav” Savage (bass), Vivian Campbell (guitar) and Rick Allen (drums) – continue to be one of the most important forces in rock music. Over the course of their career the band has produced a series of classic groundbreaking albums that set the bar for generations of music fans and artists alike. The group’s spectacular live shows and arsenal of hits have become synonymous with their name, leading Def Leppard to be heralded as an institution in both the music and touring industry. Most recently, the band won the fan voted Classic Rock Magazine Album of the Year award.

PiercingMetal Thoughts: Having been a fan of Def Leppard for a very long time, and I am speaking from around the time of “High and Dry” when it was first released on vinyl, I think something like this is super cool. I vaguely remember hunting down a Def Leppard item way back when with my rocker circle because one of the girls in our group was a huge fan. Though I am not sure about what we were hunting, it could have very well been this very album. Back then there were tons of record shops in the East Village and we went to quite a few of them without question. I thought that girl was super duper awesome and probably would have followed her to the moon if she wanted me to but I digress. Hopefully more bands will get on point and see to releasing this sort of thing for their fans because early day stuff is always such a treat. I also hope that sometime in the future they decide to put this on a CD since I don’t always get to play my vinyl and still need a new player for the stuff. What do you readers think about this one? “Songs From The Sparkle Lounge” by Def Leppard

Artist: Def Leppard
Title: “Songs From The Sparkle Lounge”
Label: Universal Music
Release Date: 4/29/2008
Genre: Hard Rock
Rating: 4/5

It’s been a few years since Def Leppard last gave their fans a studio album and when you consider that it was as far back as 2002 when they gave us the ill-received “X”, you had to wonder and hope that the next effort would be something that was actually worth waiting for. I’ll be the first to admit that I had lost a lot of my love for the band that once gave us the powerhouse “Pyromania” and even its blockbuster follow up “Hysteria” after they delivered “Slang” and “Euphoria” because as opposed to a band who was maturing with their fans they seemed an act that was reaching old age quicker than the audience was. Lucky for all who ever plunked down their hard earned cash for a Def Leppard album the new release is something that we have all wanted to hear from the band in years. “Songs From The Sparkle Lounge” is a Hard Rock album that is loaded with hooks, tasty melodies and sing along choruses that will find you once again embracing the band if you were someone like me who had decided to stick with the old stuff. “Go” starts us off and this is a heavy number that crunches along with a slow and steady pace. It’s sound harkens back to the “Hysteria” days and I would find that much of the album held this sort of vibe which was ok with me since it was a juggernaut of song and sales for the group. Either way they manage to hook you with the opening track and that is always good. Next up comes the crossover hit with Country superstar Tim McGraw. At first I groaned at the idea but this tune is not some milquetoast Pop number but instead a definite radio friendly rocking hit.

“Rock of Ages: Definitive Collection DVD” by Def Leppard

Artist: Def Leppard
Title: “Rock Of Ages: Definitive Collection DVD”
Label: Universal Records
Release Date: 11/15/2005
Genre: Hard Rock
Rating: 7/10

The moment that I began to watch this DVD I was brought back to my youth as I remembered nights with friends as we watched either “Friday Night Videos” or MTV. In my circle, “Friday Night Videos” was the way to go since not everyone had the famous music video channel back then. The videos of Def Leppard were staple rotations on this and similar programs and while not as unique as Duran Duran or ZZ Top’s offerings they still had an inherent coolness factor to them. I loved seeing this Heavy Rock band being a regular feature on these programs as they allowed us to see such things in an influential time for music. Time has caused me to lose memory of the other shows that did this for bands and there were a few of them trust me on that. During this time in Music History the use of videos really helped the genre and this was especially the case on Heavy Rock and Metal bands. These were groups that focused and held such a need for the visual end of things that there were always a few videos for each album that was released. Even new bands were assured of having some videos accompany their album and soon after they would make their way to the networks. This DVD comes to us as a companion release to their CD Anthology also entitled “Rock Of Ages”; this is a suitable title to name a hits piece after one of the group’s biggest songs. While this is not the entire collection of 39 existing video films that I believe the band has in their archives, this single DVD gives you an almost song for song version to enjoy visually after you have absorbed the double CD. Those that seek the other videos the group has can look up their “Historia/In The Round” or “Visualize: Video Archive” for those. The DVD comes with a booklet that has some brief liner notes as well as some great photos of the band members. There is also a dedication page to the late Steve Clark who passed away in 1991. The bonus features are simply the rehearsal of an upcoming track on their new CD and some band commentary. You are also able to setup your own play list of the DVD and that allows you to bypass that which you don’t like.
