Welcome to the Marvel NOW! Universe the premiere issues of “The Superior Spider-Man” which comes about a month after the cancellation of the long running “The Amazing Spider-Man” title that ended last December with issue #700.
So you all know a bit more about the premise of this new series, I have taken it from the official Wikipedia page of the title to bring you up to speed. Check it out.
“The Superior Spider-Man is an ongoing comic book series published by Marvel Comics that debuted in January 2013 as part of Marvel NOW!. The series is written by Dan Slott with artwork by Ryan Stegman, Humberto Ramos, and Giuseppe Camuncoli. It features a reformed Otto Octavius who has taken over Peter Parker’s body and, having allowed Peter to die in Octavius’ body but being affected by Peter’s memories, is determined to be a better Spider-Man than Peter ever was, and a better man than Otto Octavius. The title replaces the long running series The Amazing Spider-Man, after the conclusion of the “Dying Wish” storyline, as the core Spider-Man book.”
PiercingMetal Thoughts: Personally speaking I think that this is a wild premise for sure and since I grew up on the classic tales of the Web-Slinger and Peter Parker, I hope that his death was not exactly as it seemed and we find him back in the red and blue costume once again. I’ll likely be checking out this title when several issues are collected into a trade paperback or something but based on collecting space and time will not be able to snag each and every issue as it hits the stands in that fashion. What do you fans of Spider-Man think of this new and very different direction and the new premise? I will leave the comments open for you to offer up those views. I look forward to hearing from you about it.
Today is the day that Marvel Comics’ own “The Amazing Spider-Man” title reaches its 700th issue and believe it or not, but after fifty years of continuous publication it will be its last as well. Now there have been numerous posted spoilers as to what is happening in the pages of the book so I will not be one of those who ruins it for other fans. I have read these spoilers and am a bit confused by the plans of writer Dan Slott but hey, it will surely be an interesting ride for sure and one that most readers never saw coming. I’ll admit that I have not been following this and many other titles as religiously as I used to but I did want to toast its achievement of 700 issues and can honestly admit that they had me along for the ride for many, many years.
A brand new Spider-Man saga and direction will begin next month with the premiere of “The Superior Spider-Man” and if you are wondering what the idea behind that rather grandiose title actually is, then you will just have to stay tuned and read it for yourself. It is a part of the brand new Marvel NOW initiative which is that company’s version of the couple of years old DC Comics “The New 52” efforts. Until then let’s get ready to say goodbye to 2012 and to a thrill ride and a half of the past fifty years of “The Amazing Spider-Man”.
Hey there my fine feathered comic book fans; so in answer to my own question up above, yes it is because believe it or not we are at the 50th Anniversary of the very first appearance of the one and only Amazing Spider-Man who began his adventures in “Amazing Fantasy” #15. The issue was actually the very last one for the title and Spider-Man would get his own book in the early months of 1963 and while I will do a posting about that when the time is right, I did want to raise a glass to toast such an anniversary for this fantastic super-hero. According to the Wikipedia page for the title, writer Stan Lee was given the go ahead to run the story about this unusual hero since the book was going to be cancelled anyway and it was felt that they would not lose anything by publishing it. Pretty funny to see how this idea actually panned out in the end. Spider-Man’s origin story did not run the full issue of the comic book but instead only a few pages and while its interior art was done by the great Steve Ditko, the cover was actually penciled by Jack Kirby and inked by Ditko. For those who might be wondering, this first appearance is valued at around 1 million dollars in Near Mint condition. That is amazing without a doubt. It’s time to spin that web but first a classic song for sure…….
“Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can. Spins a web, any size, catches thieves just like flies….Look out! Here comes a Spider-Man. Is he strong listen bud, he’s got radioactive blood. Can he swing, on a thread? Take a look overhead, hey there….there goes a Spider-Man. In the chill of night, at the scene of a crime, like a streak of light he arrives just in time…..Spider-Man, Spider-Man, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man; Wealth and fame. He’s ignored. Action is his reward. To him, life is a great big bang up. Whenever there’s a hang up; You’ll find the Spider man”.

Thanks to our Comic Con adventures and numerous posts about the “The New 52” titles from DC Comics, the readers of the PiercingMetal Musings blog don’t need me to tell them how we really enjoy the comic book medium over here. I will even say that I have had a serious appreciation for many of the live action movies from these characters over the last few years. With that being the case I wanted to share the recently released new trailer for the upcoming “Amazing Spider-Man” film by Sony Pictures. At first I thought this would continue the saga that we liked with Spider-Man 1, 2 and 3 but no….this film is a reboot of the franchise and when I heard this I was a little skeptical. Anyway, we can talk more on this in a moment, just watch the trailer first.
PiercingMetal Thoughts: So what do you readers think? I have to admit that this trailer sure does look interesting and the casting appears to be sound based on what we get to see here. As you can tell by the trailer, the villain for the film will be The Lizard and I am sure that comics fans have been wanting him for years. Dr. Connors was in a few of the films already but it was a tease. With the reboot we get the big change and some deeper rationale for his transformation. You know how they change this stuff ever so slightly to make it work as a movie. Since some really good stuff has been done with Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America I am hopeful that the magic continues with Spider-Man because he is one of my very favorite heroes of them all. I’d love to hear what you folks think about this or the film franchise. This one appears to be my second Summer movie as it comes out in July 2012. The first will be “The Avengers” and I’ve already mentioned just how excited I am for that one…….oooh I just got a chill. LOL.
