Tonight was going to be an interesting one for any fan of Modern Heavy Music as it was not only what appeared to be the very first appearance on the Best Buy Theater stage for Sixx A.M. but it was also the return of Finland’s Apocalyptica. The tour package across the board was to feature an opening Vamps set (those guys from Japan) and the Apocalyptica before Sixx AM but that was not to be the case for the NYC show. Opening the show would be one of the Big Apples local circuit bands called Honor Among Thieves. I’ve heard this name before in the past at some of the venues down on the Lower East Side where they generally seem to play and their sound is a solid Hard Rock when it comes down to it. I was told that one of their members works at the venue so he had a lot of staff and area friends rallying their musical charge. It was nice to see and I wish them well with their continued adventures. Vamps would pick up the final dates of the tour if I was not mistaken and even better for us fans in NYC, they would be doing a headlining show at this very venue at the end of the week. Now it was time to get classy-call, as the great Apocalyptica was ready to take the stage.

A few days ago this press release came across the computer screen at the PiercingMetal Command HQ and I apologize for the delay in sharing it with you. I’m still getting used to having both of the website parts in one space and feeding your sensors with coolness but here we go. Apparently the Finnish Cello sensations of Apocalyptica have signed to the Eleven Seven Music Group. Check out the full skinny and I’ll return with some additional thoughts at the close.
The Press Release:
New York, NY – Eleven Seven Music Group is proud to announce the signing of Finnish rockers Apocalyptica in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East and South East Asia. “Successful artists are about talent that differentiates them from the rest of the pack. Apocalyptica have consistently proven that they have their own unique niche,” says CEO Allen Kovac.
Apocalyptica is a Finnish cello-rock band from Helsinki, formed in 1993. The band is composed of classically trained cellists Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, Perttu Kivilaakso and drummer Mikko Sirén. Their music borrows elements from a wide variety of genres including classical music, metal, world, folk and progressive rock. They have sold over four million albums to date. The band’s recent albums included both instrumentals and collaborations with various singers, such as Corey Taylor, Adam Gontier and Cristina Scabbia. Apocalyptica have recently recruited an official vocalist, Franky Perez, who was part of Scars on Broadway, Pusher Jones and appeared on Slash’s first solo record…

In comic books, there is nothing I like more than first issues and first appearances and I guess this lifelong passion of mine moved into my musical focuses since I seem to like first-ever headlining tours as well. So, what am I rambling about this time you might ask – Well the answer is very simply that Nikki Sixx and his merry mates of Sixx A.M will be heading out on their first time ever headlining tour. Check out the full press scoop along with the dates and poster and I’ll return at the close with more information and opinion.
The Press Release:
Los Angeles, CA – James Michael, DJ Ashba and Nikki Sixx, collectively known as SIXX:A.M., released their third album MODERN VINTAGE yesterday which debuted at #1 on the iTunes Rock Album chart. The band celebrated the release by playing their first live show since 2009 last night at iHeart Radio Theater in Los Angeles, CA in front of an intimate crowd, hosted by Trey Morgan from 98.7, LA’s alternative radio and in partnership with iHeartRadio Live. The big announcement at the event was that SIXX:A.M. will be embarking on their first-ever headline tour in 2015 playing a limited number of dates across North America with special guest Apocalyptica (see ticket info further below). Says bassist Nikki Sixx: “Fans have been asking for years “When is Sixx:A.M. gonna tour?” and we’ve finally announced our first headline tour. We can’t wait to play these songs live and put on a rock extravaganza for our fans. We’re excited to announce that we’re bringing along Apocalyptica as special guest because we are fans of their music and think this is going to be an amazing night of music from beginning to end”. Eicca Toppinen, cellist of Apocalyptica adds: “When we heard about this tour, we loved the idea right away! We were on Nikki’s radio show before and had a great time. I really liked Sixx:AM’s first two albums and am very much looking forward to the new record. Going on tour with Sixx:AM will bring a great night of music to all our fans.”
“It is extremely exciting to get the band on the road. The demand for them to perform live has been building over the years. We can finally give the fans what they have been asking for,” says the band’s agent, Peter Pappalardo of Artist Group International. To round out the band’s live lineup they have added drummer, Jeff Fabb (In This Moment, Black Label Society, Filter) into the mix. Says singer James Michael: “For three records now we have been envisioning what a Sixx:A.M. headline tour would look and feel like. We are so excited to finally be bringing these songs to life”. Adds guitarist DJ Ashba: “Over the years we feel we have taken our fans on some pretty incredible and diverse musical journeys. However, they have only been able to experience half of our vision. For the first time we are going to present a visual journey to go along with the music. This tour will be something you won’t want to miss. This will be the ultimate Sixx:A.M. Experience”.

Venue: Nokia Theatre Times Square (New York, NY)
Opener: Dir En Grey, Evaline
Label: Jive Records
Apocalyptica was back in NYC once again and this time the master Finnish cellists would be supporting their recently released “7th Symphony” album. The music found on the CD follows a similar premise as we found on “Worlds Collide” from a couple of years ago where the group is accompanied on some tracks by vocal personalities of note.
Evaline: I walked in on this independent group, and didn’t mind much of what they were playing but I had to admit that it was not enough of a dose to formulate a sound opinion on what they were all about. Had I hated the two songs I heard it would be unfair to lambast them and had I loved the two songs I heard it would be equally unfair to toss them roses at the end of the performance. That being said, they did not sound bad and I would check them out again in the future if the circumstances found me being able to do so.
