Yes it is that involved. Among the numerous highlights that happen over these few days are the special showcases that are sometimes only open to the CMJ Badge holders while others let the general public in with the purchase of a ticket. One of the events that PiercingMetal.com has enjoyed since its inception is the Skateboard Marketing Showcase that is spearheaded by the company’s founder Munsey Ricci. This past week was the annual CMJ Music Convention and like many before it would again invade The Big Apple and deliver more music than any one person could easily absorb. To say that there is something for everyone at the CMJ convention would be an understatement and while I would have loved to partake in a lot more that was happening, the time was just not there for me to do so based on a hectic week of Metal concerts that required my coverage. One of the things that I did manage to enjoy was the annual Skateboard Marketing music showcase which is hosted by the company’s founder Munsey Ricci. I’ve been working as an ally in Metal media with Munsey for about five years now and was eager to help him and his friends celebrate the company’s 18th year of doing this kind of showcase. This years hang would be at The Bowery Poetry Club (across the street from the location that once housed CBGB’s) and it was sure to be a good time of familiar faces, cold beers and loud music. I was certain that the bands would be something interesting because one year we found the legendary Fear Factory performing at it, while last year we got both Autumn Black and Ionia. Tonight there would only be one act delivering out the Metal and their name was Texas Hippie Coalition, and while I had only heard their name a couple of times, I had heard that they were along the lines of your Southern Fried Metal genre and let’s face it, a lot of that stuff rocks. I shot a lot of photos and documented the performance as well and its linked to at the bottom of the party stuff that you will see here so hang onto your hats for it.
Artist: Autumn Black Venue: The Bowery Poetry Club (New York, NY) Opener: Ionia Date: 10/23/2008 Label: Tyburn Records
Once again we found the Big Apple besieged by the annual CMJ Convention and all of the parties, gatherings and showcases that come along with it. I had to admit that even if you were not someone who was partaking in the convention, that this particular week in New York City was a very busy one with shows from bands such as Amon Amarth starting it off and Yngwie Malmsteen closing it out. These two killer shows had actually been preceded by incendiary gigs from Iced Earth, Kamelot, Children of Bodom, Testament and even Overkill. If you were looking for Metal this month it was very clear that The Big Apple was the place to be. Tonight’s adventuring would actually be a part of the annual Skateboard Marketing showcase which is held by the company’s founder Munsey Ricci. Ricci has been an industry staple for many years, so it’s really cool to be invited down to see what he has planned for the media folks that he knows. The party would be held in the Bowery Poetry Club and feature two new rising stars on the Metal scene. The first band would be Ionia who had a very Melodic Rock sound to them and the main band for the night would come by the way of Autumn Black who hail from the Los Angeles/San Diego, CA area. Event: Skateboard Marketing 14th Anniversary Industry Showcase Venue: Don Hills (New York, NY) Band: Fear Factory Date: 9/15/2005 Label: Calvin Records
The CMJ Music Marathon is a musical force plain and simple. Short for The College Music Journal, this magazine is the industry resource for College Radio and Retail people. This year the event would be no different as it brings together artists and all sorts of industry personnel as it has done for the past 20 years. In addition to the great music there are often fantastic gatherings spread out across the City. PiercingMetal.com had the pleasure of attending one of the many killer parties that come along with it being the CMJ. This particular party would be the 14th Anniversary Party of Skateboard Marketing; Host Munsey Ricci was on hand to make sure everyone in attendance had a great time. This party was not only held in the popular NYC Club Don Hills, but would feature a special musical performance by the one and only Fear Factory. The band just completed a successful appearance as one of the Main Stage bands for Megadeth’s Gigantour and being able to see them knock out some tunes in a small venue like this would be very intense indeed. The band was also celebrating their release of the new CD “Trangression” on Calvin Records. That evening the bar was sponsored by both Budweiser and Jagermeister so you can imagine that a lot of drinking got done.
