Megan McCauley @ Arlene’s Grocery (4/8/2008)

While we had only seen her perform a few shorts weeks ago, we were in the mood to do so again and as result found ourselves back at Arlene’s Grocery for an evening of music. This time around Megan would be presenting herself differently and also have the lovely British lass Kelly Waters performing as well. We featured some comments on Kelly in the article and if you scroll past the logo below you will see it all.

We had happened upon the appearance of Megan McCauley only a few weeks prior to this writing and learned that evening that the sultry Vamp was doing a series of performances at the club over the span of several weeks. The first time around she was there and performing before a Deep Purple band that I had come to see and her gig was a pleasant surprise for me. Having enjoyed the set that she did, I decided that I would once again attend before the run of shows had ended. Tonight she would be on a little later and when I walked in I caught several songs from a lovely British import named Kelly Waters. Kelly’s music is more along the lines of the singer songwriter vibe and she played guitar while she sang and was accompanied by a gentleman who played the conga drums. Of course her sound is not something that I would regularly report on in this part of the site but I had to say that for a pleasant change of pace I enjoyed myself and wish her luck. She is a cute girl with a warm smile and very nice voice and definitely is accessible to those who like that particular sound. Go get ‘em Kelly. Now it was time for us to enjoy another set from Megan and this time she would not come out as the vamp that we saw only a few weeks ago but as more of a tomboy Rocker chick and as expected she was hot in this outfit as well.

Megan McCauley @ Arlene’s Grocery (3/11/2008)

I actually had met Megan McCauley at a show that featured both Otep and American Head Charge a couple of years ago and was intrigued by what she said her music was going to be about. Fast forward to this review, we learned of Megan performing at Arlene’s Grocery for a bunch of shows. Those who are curious can scroll past her name below and be brought to the article.

It was by sheer coincidence that I found myself at Arlene’s Grocery tonight for this show that featured Wind-Up Records own Vamp, Megan McCauley. My original plan for the night was to kick back some dinner and a brew or three and then see an all star collection of area musicians performing a set of Deep Purple music. I found out that they were actually going to play the entire “Burn” album from start to finish and then cap it off with some other Purple standards, but that detail in full is for another article. So when I glanced at the events calendar on the venue site for details I noticed that the sultry siren Megan would be performing just before them and when I realized this I knew that I should arrive early enough to be able to catch her set. For those of you who haven’t heard her or heard of her yet, Ms. McCauley is a relatively new signing to Wind-Up Records and has released her debut on the label entitled “Better Than Blood”. Musically, she has one hell of a voice and I guess the best way to draw a quick idea about her sound is to think a little along the lines of Amy Lee from Evanescence but with a lot more soul and just a little bit more of a dark side tossed in for good measure. I had actually met Megan once before at an area Otep show and found out about her music that way but since there are others who might yet need to be schooled on the young lady, she was also featured on two of the super-hero movie soundtracks that were released over the past couple of years. The singer had one song featured on the soundtrack for “Elektra” (and if you’ve seen the movie, you will probably agree that the music was the best part of the whole thing) and two songs appeared on the one for “Fantastic Four”, a better motion picture and when it came down to it slightly more powerful tunes.

“Fantastic Four – The Album” by Various Artists

Artist: Various Artists
Title: “Fantastic Four” – Soundtrack
Label: Wind-Up Records
Release Date: 7/5/2005
Genre: Alternative
Rating: 7

I feel as though Wind-Up Records have optioned all the recent crop of super-hero soundtracks outside of Spiderman and l use the release of “Fantastic Four” to cement my statement. I had enjoyed listening to the “Daredevil” and “Elektra” pieces so I expected more of the same when it came to “Fantastic Four”. This piece however would be a half and half of good and bad in my opinion. There are some highlights from outside of the Wind-Up family such as Velvet Revolver and Sum 41. Each of the bands delivering a solid track. Simple Plan however simply ruins the classic Cheap Trick tune “Surrender”. Reviewing the contributions from the Wind-Up roster is the tune by Alter Bridge (the new band formed from the ashes of Creed) as well as another track from Ben Moody (co-founder of Evanescence). This time around Ben has Anastacia with him and this track has some heat to it. Ben has been keeping busy since he left Evanescence and hopefully will have a full release soon.
