PiercingMetal Sees “Shin Godzilla” aka “Godzilla Resurgence” @ AMC Empire 25

“Shin Godzilla” is the latest film featuring the King Of The Monsters and the 31st to feature the famous Kaiju. 29 films came care of the Toho Studios people while two were American made features. You might recall the dismal “Godzilla” with Matthew Broderick from 1998 along with the 2014 reboot of that which was also called “Godzilla”. That wasn’t as bad by comparison. Now I got to see this film a couple of weeks ago at the VIP Screening that was held before the NY Comic Con thanks to Funimation but since it was not opening to the public for a few more days I held back on the personal overview since I knew it would have some spoiler stuff in the narrative. Now that’s its opened and run the course, I can safely do that. Here we go.

Our adventure begins with a sort of Japanese Coast Guard examining an abandoned boat and while they are looking around the vessel, something appears to attack them and while it seems unexplained to the masses back on land, we viewers know in our hearts that its Godzilla giving a first “hello”. We then find ourselves in a conference room in Japan where so much back and forth discussion is given. The film is almost entirely in Japanese (there are some English moments but not many) and as result we have sub-titles to read as it all goes by. Is it a volcano is it an underground earthquake or some kind of explosion are par for the course in the discussion and there is a whole lot of discussion going on. There is almost 20 minutes of straight discourse with not a single piece of destructive action. I tell you my eyes were keeping busy reading all the sub-titles. This film is considered to be a reboot of the classic film that starred Raymond Burr so the people of Japan were seeing the monster for the very first time in these now modern 2016 times. I guess everyone’s Facebook status was pretty troubling to read and their Instagram’s on the terrifying side.

About The Film: Shin Godzilla (シン・ゴジラ Shin Gojira?, also known as Godzilla Resurgence) is a 2016 Japanese science fiction kaiju film featuring Godzilla, produced and distributed by Toho. It is the 31st film in the Godzilla franchise, the 29th Godzilla film produced by Toho, and Toho’s third reboot of the franchise. The film is co-directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, with a screenplay by Anno and visual effects by Higuchi and stars Hiroki Hasegawa, Yutaka Takenouchi, and Satomi Ishihara and reimagines Godzilla’s origins where he emerges in modern Japan for the first time. In December 2014, Toho announced plans for a new domestic Godzilla film. Anno and Higuchi were announced as the film’s directors in March 2015 and principal photography began on September and ended in October with the special effects work following in November that year. Shin Godzilla was released in Japan on July 29, 2016 in IMAX, 4DX, and MX4D to positive reviews and was a box office success, becoming the highest grossing live-action Japanese film for 2016. (thanks Wiki).

The Cast:
Hiroki Hasegawa as Rando Yaguchi
Yutaka Takenouchi as Hideki Akasaka
Satomi Ishihara as Kayoko Ann Patterson

The film features several cameos and supporting appearances, including Kengo Kora, Ren Osugi, Akira Emoto, Kimiko Yo, Jun Kunimura, Mikako Ichikawa, Pierre Taki, Takumi Saito, Keisuke Koide, Arata Furuta, Sei Hiraizumi, Kenichi Yajima, Tetsu Watanabe, Ken Mitsuishi, Kyūsaku Shimada, Kanji Tsuda, Issei Takahashi, Shinya Tsukamoto, Kazuo Hara, Isshin Inudo, Akira Ogata, Shingo Tsurumi, Suzuki Matsuo, Mayumi Ogawa, Kreva, Katsuhiko Yokomitsu, and Atsuko Maeda. Mansai Nomura portrayed Godzilla through motion capture.

PiercingMetal Thoughts: I should say that I had to leave off the premise part of this one because the film has already opened up in Japan and that means the full story was in the Wiki blurbs that you usually find in these postings. I caught the film last week during a VIP Advance Screening as part of the assembled press and I enjoyed myself. I’ll hold back on the full review until after the limited run so I don’t spoil it for the rest of you. There were parts I liked but also parts that I didn’t care for and at the end of the day it was interesting to see where they were taking Godzilla in these modern times. What do you readers think? Will you be catching this one while it runs for the next week? Let me know in the comments and if you saw it already please hold off your views on the film until I post my own review. Those will make my own words stronger. I can’t believe this is the 31st Godzilla movie. I don’t think I’ve seen them all despite my lifelong fandom of the King Of The Monsters. I guess I best look these up on a streaming service to catch up with the missing chapters.
