Marvel Comics Announces The Return Of “The Fantastic Four”

The Press Release:
As revealed by Editor in Chief C.B. Cebulski in an official video from Marvel, FANTASTIC FOUR will return this summer in an all-new monthly series, written by Dan Slott (Amazing Spider-Man, Silver Surfer) with art by Sara Pichelli (Spider-Man: Miles Morales).

“I started my adventures in the Marvel Universe with a freaked-out Reed Richards, the Watcher and the Silver Surfer,” Slott told The New York Times in an interview. “I’ve wanted this for so long.”

“We’ve been waiting for the right creators to come available for this book,” Cebulski revealed during Marvel’s official announcement. “Fantastic Four is not an easy team to draw – The Thing is the big orange rock guy, Reed can move in all kinds of directions, Johnny is on fire when he flames on, and Sue, when she is invisible or not, you still have to make her presence felt in each panel — and Sara can just do that like nobody else.”

PiercingMetal Thoughts: It was brief and to the point but honestly who needs much more when it is news such as this. I’m very happy to find the first family returning to Marvels line of titles because there was a time in my life as a fan of the medium that I felt it was one of the best reads on the stands. When the title was cancelled back in 2015, the sales on the title were down and the interest was waning based on the advance reports and clips from the “Fant4stic” film that was being released. Needless to say that movie was new levels of dreadful and if you wonder how bad, well, it made “Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice” seem like “Gone With The Wind”. I’m glad that the series is coming back and will be at the writing helm of Slott since he is a talented scribe who knows these characters quite well. I’m hopeful for great things and will be reserving a copy from my local comic book shop when it comes time to do that. Now that Disney owns the Fox Studios and has these characters back in their stable, we can hope for a proper, more to canon film being worked on. It’s going to take some time so let’s just plan on enjoying the series and the re-introduction of the Fantastic Four to the other Marvel titles that are currently on the shelf. I have already shared a lot of the trailers that were unveiled at the just held Comic Con International and a couple of them have changed my mind about certain cinematic properties that will be coming to life before our very eyes. I’m speaking about the “Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice” one most specifically since while it still strikes me as “too dark” a film, it does appear to be more interesting than I was initially giving it credit for being. Now it seems as though there is a second, better look inside the happenings of the film that is a reboot of “Fantastic Four” which opens in theaters everywhere in August of this year. Let’s watch now and discuss in a couple of minutes.

Marvel Comics’ “Fantastic Four” #645 – “The End” Is Here

I can hardly believe that I am penning these words to you (uhm, typing them I mean since we are an online resource of course), but after over 50 years of publication, Marvel Comics is cancelling the “Fantastic Four” comic book at issue #645. Check out the cover and some description below.

"Fantastic Four" #645
“Fantastic Four” #645

THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL FANTASTIC FOUR STORY CONCLUDES IN AN EXTRA-SIZED SPECIAL! Will the Fantastic Four defeat The Quiet Man and the corrupted forces of the Heroes Reborn universe? Will the Johnny get his powers back? Will Reed and Sue be a family again? Will this be the end or will this be 4ever?

PiercingMetal Thoughts: Now I realize that I have already mentioned this a few days ago based on needing to share the additional covers that would be featured on this particular issue but the cancellation of such a title is forcing me to expand upon that post right here and offer more personal insights and reflection. This was shocking news to me since I was a “Fantastic Four” reader for many years and have a few hundred issues of the series in my collection somewhere. It was really great stuff with a lot of fascinating characters. I was too young to fully appreciate the earliest tales unless they were in a trade paperback edition but the works of Lee and Kirby were awesome for sure. Some of my favorite tales also came care of John Byrne and I loved Galactus, The Silver Surfer, Doctor Doom and even Impossible Man as far as their interactions. The title was the launching point for many iconic characters of course and I am speaking of The Watcher, The Inhumans, Black Panther and so many others. Most of our readers know that the team is not a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that we get to enjoy with films like “Captain America: The First Avenger” and “Avengers” etcetera which is because the rights are owned by 20th Century Fox. The studio is releasing a third “Fantastic Four” film in August sometime and based on posts that know what is going on in the film I am a little scared. Too many drastic canon changes and that is just foolish. There was even a rumor that the series cancellation was based on Marvel higher ups being pissed about the translation of the franchise in the upcoming film. It was later denied but who knows, it wouldn’t surprise me and if Fox screws this one up they should just get rid of the rights and let Marvel Studios deliver a fun film with these great characters. With this news being the topic of my day I think I will watch the 2005 “Fantastic Four” film and head to the comic book store to grab a copy of the final issue before it sells out. What do you readers think about the series cancellation news? Were you reading the “Fantastic Four” recently or had done so in the past? Let me know your thoughts about it all in the comments.
