The Queen has returned “All Hail The Queen!!!” Yes my friends; Doro Pesch the one true Metal Queen was back in her adopted home of New York City and performing a few choice shows for her loyal subjects. Right off the bat this was impressive to me because it was not much more than a week ago that the singer had returned from Germany to her Long Island home only to find that it had been destroyed by the recent Hurricane Irene. Reports hit the Metal websites about flooding and loss of numerous personal treasures and stage items but rather than disappoint her fans with a cancellation, she pressed on and said the gig would commence just the same. Thank you Doro, as you are truly an inspiration to us all in terms of personal inner resolve and strength. On behalf of the Metal Republic I proudly say “we love you”. The gig this evening would be at The Gramercy Theatre and the celebration would surround the recently released “25 Years In Rock” DVD/CD that was recorded in 2008 and features a full concert, a documentary and a live CD. Talk about a chock full of Metal package.

Primal Fear @ Gramercy Theatre (5/20/2010)

Artist: Primal Fear
Venue: Gramercy (New York, NY)
Opener: Desdemon, Havok
Date: 5/20/2010
Label: Frontiers Records

In a historical sense in terms of the traditional Power Metal bands that tour around the world consistently and seldom get over to these shores, Primal Fear pretty much tops the list of those groups that you want to see making the US rounds a little more often than they do. Lucky for those supporters of the Heavy Metal way the band would arrive at long last back in September of 2009 and go over like gangbusters. I had missed that show based on familial commitments and was happy to find out that they would be returning without an incredibly long passage of time. As result, tonight’s show would be the second time in under a year that Primal Fear was making an appearance in New York City and this was welcome news to my ears since I could not enjoy them that last time. The interesting thing for me as a Metal fan is that while I have always seemed to enjoy what the band puts out musically, I was never much the hard core study or follower of their teachings outside of a couple of releases. My guess is that that was largely due to that briefly referenced fact about the band not getting over here all that much. Like many of the Metal shows these days, the event would be held at the Gramercy Theatre which is a medium sized venue that serves well depending on the artist. Opening the sure to be killer set by Primal Fear would be DesDemon and Havok. Here is how the night progressed.

Opener: Tyr, White Wizzard, Swashbuckle, Desdemon

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the forest, Korpiklaani was back and headlining another tour that was bound to increase the energy and alcohol levels of many a Metal fan in the region. Tonight’s adventure would effectively be my first Metal show of the year and considering it was going to be the return appearance of Finland’s Korpiklaani, I could think of no better way to start off 2010. The band last visited these shores when they headlined the second Paganfest USA back in May of 2009. That was an exemplary show that found Ireland’s Primordial, Finland’s Moonsorrow and Montreal’s Blackguard all on point for the causes of Metal. While my first Metal show of the year this was not my first actual show as I had gone to see legendary Blues guitarist Johnny Winter only a couple of days prior to this event. After expanding my mind with the sounds of the inspirational guitarist I felt that I was absolutely ready for the rousing blast of Folk Metal fun that Korpiklaani brings to the beer pint stocked table. Joining them for the tour would be Tyr, Swashbuckle, White Wizzard and the whole shebang would be started off by one area band. I made sure to get in early enough to see everyone because from beginning to end I knew this was going to be a fun night.
