Metal’s Darkest Day: “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, A Decade Gone (2004-2014)

Has it really been ten years? Well I guess it has and yet I still find it troubling to write down but the great “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott has been gone for ten years as of this very day. The Metal world at large all know the story about how the master guitarist was gunned down during a show with his band Damageplan by a crazed gunman. This terrible night also claimed the lives of three others and injuring several others.

“Metal’s Dark Side: Hard And The Furious V.1” by Jasmin St. Claire

Artist: Jasmine St. Claire
Title: “Metal’s Dark Side: Hard And The Furious V.1”
Label: Music Video Distributors
Release Date: 4/25/2006
Genre: Heavy Metal
Rating: 6/10

Sexy hostess and former adult actress Jasmine St. Claire apparently loves Heavy Metal music and by the look of this DVD it seems the harder the better. The DVD series she has launched entitled “Metal’s Dark Side” is her aim at focusing on the darkest and heaviest stuff she can manage to bring you. While it was an interesting premise I wondered what the overall appeal would be on a larger scale. Jasmine being drop-dead gorgeous will appeal to the testosterone levels of most fans of this music but being an actress and then becoming a host of a program (even one of your own design) takes a little more skill than is demonstrated here. On the DVD Jasmine interviews several notable Death and Black Metal personalities along with traditional icons but the interviews seem very ad-hoc and don’t give the viewer much in the way of interesting band commentary. Everyone seems to be whooping it up but there is nothing in-depth that will have you saying “AH HA, that’s what they meant”, and this factor makes the piece a watch once sort of thing. Without being totally negative on it, I felt this would make for an interesting cable television show to give extra pump to the music we all love and fight to keep vital, however just making this a DVD to sell will limit the chance for the wider populace to see it. Jasmine does include some of these bands videos, but with so many groups releasing compilation pieces and with other networks showcasing this type of thing again I was not that taken by their inclusion. There are interview segments and joking with all the groups listed and I think that the interview with Damageplan is probably the best segment on the whole video. It ends with a brief tribute to Dimebag Darrell, a man who Metal misses very much and will never forget.

“Dimevision Vol. 1: This Is The Fun I Have” by Dimebag Darrell

Artist: Dimebag Darrell
Title: “Dimevision Vol. 1: This Is The Fun I Have”
Label: Big Vin Records
Release Date: 5/2/2006
Genre: Heavy Metal
Rating: 7/10

On December 8, 2004 a crazed gunman jumped on stage and opened fire during the performance of the band Damageplan; in his line of fire was guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott and as a result of this attack, the musician and 4 other innocents died unnecessarily. Dimebag was one of the most innovative guitarists that had come to the Heavy Metal scene and along with his Brother laid down some brutal music during their years in Pantera. The band was without compromise musically but eventually disbanded and led to the brothers forming Damageplan. This new band would expand on their musical ideals and desires and be off to a great start until the fateful night. In the almost two years it has been since his murder, his Brother Vinny Paul has formed “Big Vin Records”. With this he has taken great measures to give Dimes fans more ways to remember him than the CD’s that were filled with his great Metal sounds. The first would be the CD “Rebel Meets Rebel” which is collaboration between the Abbotts and Country Western star David Allan Coe. The result is a Country Metal hybrid that was quite interesting to listen to. The review for that CD is elsewhere in these pages so take a look for it. The other release is this DVD and it is a cornucopia of clips and videos that show Dime doing what he did best and having what appears to be a whole lot of fun. As you watch it you can’t help but think that this is the way he would want to be remembered – Kicking ass on the guitar and having crazy fun with his friends. It was an amusing DVD to watch especially considering some of the really early footage of Dime and Vinny in performance. Fans will totally get a kick out of hearing their version of the Metallica classic “Seek and Destroy” which shows us that not only could Dime rip on the guitar very early but he could also do a pretty decent James Hetfield vocal impression when he needed to. This and the other vintage young Dime footage are priceless and perhaps my favorite portions of the DVD.
