Tonight: “Comic Book Men” Season 4 (10/12/2014)

Not only had the 2014 NY Comic Con ended a few hours ago and led us into the fifth season premiere of “The Walking Dead” (which I hope you are not planning on spoiling for anyone after it ends) but not long after that show airs we shall get the fourth season premiere of “Comic Book Men”. Since I was leading us into “TWD” I felt that I might as well continue to help this series with related broadcast posts. Have you given this show a chance yet? Let’s discuss a little more after the logo below.

The Premise: As I’ve denoted for the last few seasons of this program, the premise of the show is the day-to-day happenings that take place in Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash which is Kevin Smith’s comic book shop that is located in Red Bank, New Jersey. As you are reading this I should admit that I have only seen the first two seasons with a spattering of the third so I am hoping that Netflix gets them again since I don’t think they are on the On Demand for AMC anymore. If you have not seen it yet, there are some similarities to the show “Pawn Stars” but done with a much geekier and comic/toy collector twist. I’ve formed this viewpoint since the customer brings in items that they wish to sell off to the store and they call in the occasional expert who knows more about a particular piece being presented. There is also a podcast that Smith hosts and the show switches back and forth from the staff talking there and the activity at the comic store. The cast of players remains the same and the show continues along at 30 minutes per episode for the fourth season.

Airing Tonight: “Comic Book Men” Season 3.5 (2/9/2014)

After being frightened to death by the happenings of tonight’s mid-season premiere of “The Walking Dead” you can breathe a little easier and relax to the brewings at Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash as the mid-season premiere for “Comic Book Men” will air this evening as well shortly after the zombies have made us their dinner. Have you seen any episodes of this show yet?

Once again, the premise of the show is the day-to-day happenings that take place in Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash which is Kevin Smith’s comic book shop that is located in Red Bank, New Jersey. At this point in time I have only seen the first two complete seasons but missed the third season so far based on my concert adventuring demands. Yes I forgot to program the DVR and I should be scolded for such insolence. This lapse also cost me the proper enjoyment of “Arrow” Season 2 but I digress. As I’ve noted before about the show there are times when you feel like you are watching a nerdier version of “Pawn Stars” where the customer brings in items that they wish to sell off to the store along with the occasional expert who knows more about a particular piece. There is also a podcast that Smith hosts and the show switches back and forth from the staff talking there and the activity at the comic store. The cast of players remains the same and the show continues along at 30 minutes per episode for the third season.

The Cast:
Kevin Smith – Store Owner and Podcast Host
Walt Flanagan – Store Manager
Mike Zapcic – One of the clerks at the shop
Bryan Johnson – Friend of the staff.
Ming Chen – One of the clerks at the shop

My Thoughts On It: While I am admittedly remiss on the earlier third season episodes I have to say that I ended up enjoying most of the first two seasons and now that the DVR is programmed I should be okay in catching up. My hope is that they air some repeats. It’s a fun ride and if you are a fan of comic books, action figures and other things that go Geek in the night then this is a quick and enjoyable thirty minutes.

The premise of the show is the day-to-day happenings that take place in Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash which is Kevin Smith’s comic book shop that is located in Red Bank, New Jersey. Having seen the first season and a few episodes of the second I can tell you that there are times when you feel like you are watching a nerdier version of “Pawn Stars” where the customer brings in items that they wish to sell off to the store along with the occasional expert who knows more about a particular piece. For instance, in the first season they called upon someone to help with a Star Wars item and another for a Godzilla piece. So far we have seen the staff go on some foraging adventures for trinkets at yard sales, flea markets and auctions. There is also a podcast that Smith hosts and the show appears to switch back and forth from the staff talking there and the activity at the comic store. Have you watched yet? What are your thoughts on the show? I will give you mind after presenting the cast of players who have remained the same. The show remains at 30 minutes per episode for the third season.

The Cast:
Kevin Smith – Store Owner and Podcast Host
Walt Flanagan – Store Manager
Mike Zapcic – One of the clerks at the shop
Bryan Johnson – Friend of the staff.
Ming Chen – One of the clerks at the shop

My Thoughts On It: Though I did not yet complete my viewing of the second season I can say that so far the show remains pretty consistent in its presentation. Sometimes there is a mission of some kind for fun sake to break up the daily shop happenings, and those for the most part have not done it for me. I do like the customer interactions and enjoyed seeing the creator of the Presidential Monsters figures paying them a visit to show his latest offerings. I’ve seen these figures at Toy Fair and think they are awesome. I don’t “love it” but then again I don’t hate it either. Its cool couch potato fair and if you are a fan of the comics medium perhaps you will enjoy it. One aspect that I do enjoy is when they tell you a little about the comic or item being brought in. This copies “Pawn Stars” for sure, but its great to see the information.

Airing Tonight: “Comic Book Men” Season 2 (10/14/2012)

Fans of the AMC Original Program and Kevin Smith will be happy to learn that season two of the unscripted reality program “Comic Book Men” airs its premiere this evening. Does this excite you? Were you a fan of it when it made its debut back in February?

The premise of the show is the day-to-day happenings that take place in Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash which is Kevin Smith’s comic book shop that is located in Red Bank, New Jersey. Having seen a few of the first seasons six episodes I can tell you that there is some similarity to “Pawn Stars” where the customer brings in items that they wish to sell off to the store along with the occasional expert who knows more about a particular piece. In season one they called upon someone to help with a Star Wars item and another for a Godzilla piece. There is also a podcast that Smith hosts and the show appears to switch back and forth from the staff talking there and the activity at the comic store. Did you watch the first season? What are your thoughts on the show? I will give you mind after presenting the cast of players who have remained the same. The show is now only 30 minutes as opposed to the 60 that the first season was.

The Cast:
Kevin Smith – Store Owner and Podcast Host
Walt Flanagan – Store Manager
Mike Zapcic – One of the clerks at the shop
Bryan Johnson – Friend of the staff.
Ming Chen – One of the clerks at the shop

My Thoughts On It: After breezing through the first season in a few hours one lazy afternoon I have to say that the show was pretty much what I expected it to be. I anticipated being only moderately interested what it offered and after seeing it this was a correct thought. When the customers brought in their wares I was the most attentive but the constant belittling of each other in the staff was getting a little stale to me. When they hit the garage sale and found some really worthwhile treasures like Mego figures and vintage comics, well that was pretty cool. I used to have so many of the Mego collections and they all broke over the years. Sigh. One thing that did strike me as curious is that we only see Smith during the podcast and never at the store. We get a visit from “Jay” early in the season and he appears to be as out there in real life as he does in the movies. Do you think you will tune in to the second season?

Airing Tonight: “Comic Book Men” (2/12/2012)

Fans of comics writer and filmmaker Kevin Smith might be excited about this new unscripted reality program airing on the AMC Network entitled “Comic Book Men” that has its season premiere this evening.

The premise of the show is the day-to-day happenings that take place in Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash which is Kevin Smith’s comic book shop that is located in Red Bank, New Jersey. I caught a few preview clips of it and it seems to have some light similarity to “Pawn Stars” where the customer brings in items that they wish to sell off to the store. There is also a podcast that Smith hosts and the show appears to switch back and forth from the staff talking there and the activity at the comic store. It’s runtime is 60 minutes. What are your thoughts on the show premise? I will give you mind after presenting the cast of players.

The Cast:
Kevin Smith – Store Owner and Podcast Host
Walt Flanagan – Store Manager
Mike Zapcic – One of the clerks at the shop
Bryan Johnson – Friend of the staff.
Ming Chen – One of the clerks at the shop

My Thoughts On It: I will say that I am curious because as a long time comic book fan I used to go into these kind of places very regularly. Pretty much every weekend after the paycheck or on new comic book day was my routine. Based on that, over the years I found myself dealing with shop owners who were awesome and helpful and would chat about the medium or titles with you for hours and on the other side of the coin there were also the ones who you hated, were self-important clowns and made you want to spend your money elsewhere as opposed to where they worked. Let’s see where Smith’s staff falls into the larger mix. The part that interests me the most is to see what people bring into the store. I think I care about that more than the interaction of the staffers with each other. Do you think you will tune in?
