Yesterday the cooler than cool cats at Marvel Studios announced their full slate of films that will make up what is going to be the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Phase 3” offerings. I’ve snagged the logos for said films and their title and I will toss in my opinions on each of them as we go through the list. Fair enough? Okay let’s go.
Captain America: Civil War – It doesn’t surprise me that the “Phase 3” is leading off with a Captain America film because “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” was just so damned exciting and loaded with action. I admit that I am not 100% convinced about “Civil War” being the best tale since so many other heroes were involved in that storyline and many of them are not properties of the Marvel Studios group. Both Fantastic Four and Spider-Man are used by 20th Century Fox and Sony respectively.
Doctor Strange: Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! So do I sound excited about the introduction of The Sorcerer Supreme to the MCU? You bet your sweet bippy that I am. We’ve seen that Marvel Studios can successfully bring us into other worlds thanks to “Guardians Of The Galaxy” so I am very hopeful about their being able to give us a Ditko-esque landscape when the good doctor begins weaving his spells on us.
Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 – The most fun you could ever have with a superhero team that you never thought you would see in a live action movie. “GOTG” was a thrill ride with sufficient doses of humor that worked perfectly. I’d like to see more characters presented here to expand the cosmic side of the MCU and also a part of the films success that was instrumental – the soundtrack. There is no doubt that this was one of the most referred to soundtracks in a long time. I know that I listened to it again and again on Spotify.
Thor: Ragnarok – I’m really curious about this next Thor chapter. Will it be the famous mythical Ragnarok or is there something else that has happened in the comics that I am not too up on. Maybe we will finally see Balder The Brave in this one and I guess its safe to assume that with a title like this that Loki will be back and maybe even Hela.
Avengers: Infinity War (Part One) – Considering that we are getting an “Infinity War” film as opposed to “Infinity Gauntlet” I will assume that by this film that Thanos will have all of his Infinity stones in one handy place. It doesn’t take a swami or soothsayer to tell you that this film will have a whole lot of characters interacting with each other. Considering its a two-part film the word epic is likely an understatement.
Black Panther – I’ve only ever been the casual fan of Black Panther but he is a great character and very integral to the Marvel Universe in comics so its high time we see him slapping the senses out of some villains and perhaps even the occasional hero of the MCU.
Captain Marvel – I’m understanding that we will be getting the Carol Danvers Captain Marvel as opposed to Mar-Vell, the original space warrior and in some sense this makes me sad since he was such a vital character for the comics. Sure he is long dead now on the printed page but he could have been introduced in film and then given us the female counterpart. This will make the first female superhero to receive her own film from Marvel Studios and can She-Hulk be far behind? Hoping not. That would rock.
Avengers: Infinity War (Part Two) – By the time part two of the “Infinity War” happens I think many of us will be absolutely spent on the superhero films. Perhaps I am wrong about this and I will admit that I do love these adventures but I am going to need another shelf for the MCU alone by the time we get here.
Inhumans – This will close out the “Phase 3” films and its a hard sell because while “Guardians” worked, this one is going to be a little tougher I think since its even more underground than they were. I would LOVE to see Black Bolt on the big screen and Medusa, Triton, Gorgon and Lockjaw as well. Karnak not so much because he was never a favorite character. They would have to showcase the Hidden City of Attilan and pit them against the likes of Maximus the Mad for this to be something compelling and I am not sure if it merits the inclusion of an already established MCU presence. Let’s see what ends up being planned for this one because its still about four years away at the point of this writing.
PiercingMetal Thoughts: I think I’ve managed to fit in all of my opinions on this very healthy phase three of films and its surely going to keep me busy for a number of years. This past year was great with “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Guardians Of The Galaxy” and I am very excited for the closure of the “Phase 2” films with “Avengers: Age Of Ultron” and “Ant-Man”. Some are not convinced that “Ant-Man” will be a strong film based on the character and to those people I say “they sold us on Guardians so let’s see what happens”. There are some exciting times coming up and we will soon find Warner Brothers offering up their own cinematic universe for the DC Comics stuff so its a good time to be a fan of this sort of thing. Like I said earlier. Make some room in your video library because you are going to need it.
