Opening Today: “Green Lantern” (6/17/2011)

“In Brightest Day, In Blackest Night; No Evil Shall Escape My Sight; Let those who worship evil’s might, beware my Power – Green Lantern’s Light!”

That’s the famous oath of the Green Lantern Corps and the words spoken by Hal Jordan every time he needs to recharge his incredible Power Ring and “suit up” as the Green Lantern of Sector 2814. That’s Earth and its surrounding area of space in case you were curious. Today is the opening of the very first ever live action Green Lantern film and if the trailers are any example of what is to be found, then it looks like a whole lot of fun.

They cast Ryan Reynolds as The Green Lantern who folks that saw the 2009 film “X-Men Orgins: Wolverine” might remember because he played Deadpool. He’s also been known to some as Van Wilder in film along with a couple of other television shows that have long since gone away. Anyways, my hope is that his particular personality transfers well to his playing Hal Jordan and of course Green Lantern. The trailers show a lot of space zooming around and the rest of the Green Lantern Corps and I’ve caught glimpses of Kilowog, Sinestro and Tomar Re. I don’t know much else about the premise of this one but I do want it to be good as it would be nice to see more DC Superheroes showing their stuff on the big screen. Do this properly and maybe we will even eventually get a Justice League of America film. That would be cool don’t you think?

Starring:
Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern
Blake Lively as Carol Ferris
Peter Sarsgaard as Hector Hammond
Mark Strong as Sinestro
Angela Bassett as Dr. Amanda Waller
Tim Robbins as Robert Hammond
Temuera Morrison as Abin Sur
Taika Waititi as Thomas Kalmaku
Geoffrey Rush as the voice of Tomar-Re
Michael Clarke Duncan as the voice of Kilowog
Clancy Brown as the voice of Parallax:
Jon Tenney as Martin Jordan, Hal Jordan’s father.
Jay O. Sanders as Carl Ferris, father of Carol Ferris
Mike Doyle as Jack Jordan, Hal Jordan’s older brother

While I will not say that I liked Green Lantern as an action hero as much as I did the likes of Batman, Superman and perhaps the overall Justice League (to leave comparisons of Marvel characters out of the thought), I was a regular reader of his comic book and have kept on with this whenever possible thanks to the trade paperback collections. If memory serves me right I think I even made a power ring of my own as a child with cardboard, magic marker and tape. Gosh I wish I still had that little personal trinket. That being said here are a number of Amazon.com links to some cool Green Lantern stuff.
