Nightwish has given us the first taste of their upcoming album “Endless Forms Most Beautiful” with the debut single entitled “Elan” and with this work we find the first studio release by the band to feature new singer Floor Jansen. The tune also features the talented Troy Donockley on pipes and flutes but he’s appeared on other stuff with the band over the years. So what is the first tune like you might be wondering and does it possess the thunderous symphonic energy that the band is most noted for. Well the answer is a little bit yes and a little bit no. “Elan” as a single is a very upbeat song for sure but it leans more towards a radio friendly side than some of their hardest core fans might have wanted to hear. It’s very catchy and does have a driving melody which suits me fine and we should remember that Nightwish often had these sorts of numbers in their releases such as “Sleeping Sun”, “Walking In The Air” and more.
To me Floor sounds perfect and I expected nothing less from her having been a fan since the second album of her After Forever band. In my humble opinion, one of the greatest voices that Metal has ever offered up is now with a band that truly expands upon and grows with her ability. Hmm I might have to use that line again with the full album review. Musically speaking everyone is on point under the direction of Maestro Tuomas Holopainen and the single will have you singing along after only a couple of listens. There is about a month and a half left to go before we can hear the full on new album “EFMB” and I felt this is a nice taste of what is to come. Bring it on Nightwish, bring it on.
