Artist: Blue Oyster Cult
Venue: Starland Ballroom – NJ
Date: 09-26-04
Opener: UFO

The long respected classic rock act Blue Oyster Cult came to the Starland Ballroom the other day to end the short tour they had been on as opener for the also legendary UFO. However, this evening the tables would be turned for some reason. Instead of headlining the gig, UFO would instead go on first and let Cult close the night. While I am not sure why this was done to be exact, I think they made the right choice for at this particular show as it seemed like the larger part of the audience was Cult Fans. The bad part of this change was the venue not telling anyone (including Press) and as a result I missed most of UFO and was just lucky to get my spot secured for the arrival of Cult.

When I arrived at the venue, I was actually a bit surprised at the amount of people in attendance. It was jam packed and their were cycles everywhere in the parking lot. It was such a large biker crowd it that I felt like I was at a Sturgis rally. I then seemed quite the novice when I was told by my Friend at how much the Bikers loved these guys. To be honest, I had only seen them a few times in my life and this was when they had opened for up for KISS during a tour back in the 80’s. However, they are definitely one of the classics in music and their material has withheld the test of time. Since their inception there have been a number of lineup changes, but Buck Dharma is still among them on lead guitar as is Eric Bloom on vocals. These two are the key members anyway, and direct the band forward year after year.

This evening’s performance would be the last for Drummer Bobby Rondinelli as he would be leaving the group to pursue his interest in the band the Lizards. Rondinelli does a great job in this band, and he clearly will be missed going forward. I have long enjoyed his playing in groups like Rainbow and then when he sat in with Zebra for some shows. It was a lot of fun getting to see him knock out some of the Cult classics. As far as the numbers performed this evening well I jotted down as much of the set list as possible, but there are some omissions. Find it in your heart to forgive me, hahahaha. Laters.
