East Brunswick, NJ’s own God Forbid have been hard at work at their craft since 1996 and with twelve years having passed since their formation it was high time that we got a comprehensive live DVD release from them. The band obviously felt the same way and has delivered unto us the DVD film “Beneath The Scars Of Glory And Progression” which comes courtesy of long time label Century Media Records. It’s a film that features a little bit of everything from the guys and its sure to please the bands most ardent fan base and even those who only kind of like them or might have caught them as openers at a show they attended over the years. It begins with a sold out concert appearance at Sayreville, NJ’s Starland Ballroom, a wonderful room with plenty of excellent vantage points to dig into a Metal show. There is a spacious general area floor where the moshing can look like a boiling ocean and semi-safe levels above the mayhem off to the side where one can still experience and witness someone tossing themselves into the fray. With the hometown show we get an energized God Forbid delivering many of their classics but choosing to stick to their most recent breakthrough album “IV: Constitution Of Treason”. Of the thirteen live tracks we find five numbers coming from this release. That was fine with me, as I feel this album was their best work to date. The crowd doesn’t seem to mind either when one judges how crazy they appear in front of the camera eye. As a concert segment, this is surely going to entertain anyone who watches it. I was impressed not only with the visual aspect of this but also the audio side which was very clear and of course is recommended to be listened to at maximum tolerable volume. This is a Metal show after all and not some poetry recital. The concert DVD also features the six video films that have been done over their career so if you want to give yourself a personal video block of God Forbid tunes, this is the best place to start. I admit that I have been enjoying when bands put their supply of videos on such releases since it ups the quality of the purchase. Of course the boys in God Forbid would not stop there, and instead continue their Melodic Death Metal mayhem on a second DVD that features documentary footage. They call the documentary “Rated R For Real” and it’s a great way to look inside the bands head as they reflect on their origins and their interactions with each other and the trials and adventures that they have experienced together since forming. It’s not overly serious and we find the band laughing and joking with each other as well. This is good because playing music is supposed to be fun in the first place.

The speed of the film also moves rather quickly and this is probably based on the intensity of the material that Doc and Dallas Coyle, Byron Davis, John Outcalt and Corey Pierce have learned to excel in delivering. I stress this because there are times that a double DVD endeavor could very well bore you to tears. Thankfully this is not the case with the God Forbid team as in the end it seemed as though the guys gave the okay on a DVD film that they would themselves want to sit down and rock to for a couple of hours. There is no real booklet included but with so much to sink your teeth into on the double DVD discs I hardly found this to be an issue. Stand up and be counted among the supporters of one of the East Coast’s best providers of the goods and snare a copy of “Beneath The Scars of Glory and Progression”, you will be glad you did.

Important Note: If you have a copy of the initial pressing of this DVD there is a good chance that you will find some issues with it. It was widely publicized that there was a problem with many copies and yes even I experienced some difficulty when I first opened mine. My copy would only open up to the main menu and no matter how many times I pressed play it would not work. It lets you select around but never proceed into the contents of the DVD and I inform you of this in the event that you think your player is at fault like I did originally. Should you find this happening, you need to return it to where you purchased it and demand a new and working version.
